I am currently living in San Antonio but have been feeling like moving to Austin. I think the city fits more of our outdoor lifestyle. I am thinking to move to Lakeway and I wanted to ask a few questions:

1.) What is the job market climate right now in Austin? This question does not just relate to the recession but to the market in general. Many have said that the competition for jobs is difficult because no one wants to leave Austin and that many PhD's wait tables as a result. Is this true? (we are not PhD's by the way).

2.) Does the job market cater only to new graduates? We are in our upper 30s and want to make sure that there will be spots for us.

3.) Does Austin pay poorly? Another rumor I hear often is that Austin pays much lower than San Antonio due to the amount of available talent. any truth to this?

4.) What is the commute like from Lakeway in to Austin these days?

PS - I have been searching the forum and reading for days and days. What I am looking for is a recent perspective.

Thank you in advanced for your responses!

It is oversaturated, and can be difficult if you don't have any internal connections to refer you. Many companies hire straight out of UT and A&M. If you've ever seen "Logan's Run", you'll understand.

The area has a higher cost of living and lower salaries than the other major cities in TX. From employers' perspectives, it's all about "supply and demand" because so many people want to move here. Commuting from Lakeway to Austin would be like this ->

The job market is very soft. But PhDs are not waiting tables.

No - the job market does not cater only to new graduates. There are many jobs that cannot be filled by recent grads. The problem is that there are many experienced people looking for work now. An experienced software or technology sales person with a proven track record might find opportunities because turnover can be high in that field.

I don't believe Austin pay is lower than San Antonio for comparable work. I think the differences between Austin and Dallas/Houston, at least in software/tech jobs, is exagerrated. I have been part of the software business in Austin since 1984 and there are many very good programmers paid well over $100K. These people do not work for the state of Texas.

It depends on what "Austin" means in your question. If you were selling software for a company located on 360 - your commute might not be bad at all. 30 minutes. I lived in Lakeway for over ten years and drove to the Arboretum area every day. It took about 40 minutes. RR 620 is getting more and more congested though.

I think 620-to-2222-to-anywhere is a slow route. But 620-71-2244 is better in many cases. 620-71-SW Pkwy may be a better route into Austin itself.
