Ok. For those that don't remember. I will be working on Ed Bluestein road in Austin. My husband is negoitating with a company for a good job in Brenham. There is no way we can live in Austin or Brenham and commute, so we need somewhere in the middle. Ideally I would have less of a commute than him because of traffic. I need suggestions. The only place I can think of is Bastrop, but I haven't heard good things about the schools there.

Suggestions please.

What about Giddings? I don't know anything about the schools, but the town seems to be growing.

Giddings is a possibility, being right smack-dab in the middle. So is Paige (a bit closer to Austin than Giddings, McDade ISD). Elgin is closer to Austin but might be too far of a commute for him.

As far as the schools are concerned, check Great Schools for ratings and parental feedback, and remember that a school that is great for one kid can be an abomination for another one, depending on the kid, and vice versa, and keep your own kids in mind. Ratings are only a place to start, and you need to dig to find out the reason for the ratings.

I hope your hubby is getting BIG BUCKS! Between Brenham and Austin?? Oh man, thats a tough one. Nearly all of the cities along 290 are pretty much the same (demographically), so pick something in the middle and happy commuting!

Yeah it's a pretty sucky option, but all that we have right now. If they give him what we are asking, I guess it will be worth it.
thanks for the suggestions, I will go look at some of the other areas.

I think it's a cool option. Very pretty countryside all throughout that part of the state.

Here's a dated map (with 2-3 y/o info) that might help for quick school info & quick geographic lookup:

Texas School Performance Maps

Based on it, you might look at Smithville & La Grange (along with Giddings & Bastrop).

Closer to Brenham.....the little towns of Round Top & Fayetteville (& of course Brenham) all look like ok to good options....but would be a longer commute for you.
