AUSTIN, Texas, April 4 (UPI) -- People flocked during the weekend to the second annual Funky Chicken Coop Tour in Austin, Texas, organizers say.

The Saturday event, sponsored by Mobile Chicken Coops and the non-profit Sustainable Food Center, drew hundreds of people looking to take a gander at 17 backyard chicken coops, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

I kept a backyard flock when I lived in California and I miss my girls so much. I'm renting a home in an HOA controlled subdivision so I can't even consider it. I encourage anyone who has the yard space (and who will not run a-fowl of the law) to do it.

My wife and I went on the tour yesterday, it was a blast. And free! It included some small farms I had no idea existed in the eastern part of town (in the city).

Other things that surprised me:

* The two main clusters of these "funky chicken" homes were in East Austin and Allandale/Crestview. Only one in all of 78704. South Austin definitely not living up to it's old rep.

* The homes on the tour in East Austin, surprisingly, seemed to be much nicer and well kept up (beautiful, in fact) compared to their Allandale/Crestview counterparts. Definitely contrary to the stereotypes of these neighborhoods.

If you get a chance to go next year I highly recommend it!

I went last year and LOVED it. Glad to see it's still picking up steam. I'm considering a coop.

I wonder if my sister's house was on the tour? She lives in the Crestview neighborhood and just recently built a chicken coop for her 3 hens.
