Hi All,

We just got back from visiting austin, looked at some homes witha realtor, and realized there is no way we can buy a house there while still living in New England. So, if we can sell our house for a decent price here in NE, we plan on moving to austin, and staying in an apartment/condo/house with a short term lease, while we find a house to buy. It will be for me, my wife, a 6 month old baby, a dog and a cat. I figure a 2 bedroom apt at minimum is what we need, and we are leaning towards SW austin to buy our home. Any ideas on where we should look, and what type of rent we can expect? Thanks!

When we moved here we were able to find a house where the landlord was willing to take a six month lease. She initially wanted a 12 month but because we were ideal tenants (previous home owners, no pets, middle aged, one small child) and it was December (not the best time to be looking for leasers), she made the exception.

I know that the large complexes will do a six month lease but they will charge quite a bit more rent for a unit than would be the case if you agreed to a 12 month lease.

We opted for a house over an apartment because if we'd gone the apartment route, we'd have to pay for storage. Additionally, the rental house had a garage so we had covered parking for two cars - necessary in this hail prone region.

For the rental house we paid 1575 a month for an 1891 square foot house (3 bed/two bath) in the Wildflower park section of Circle C ranch.

Apartments will do a short term lease. We were looking to do a 3 month lease 3 bed 2 bath apartment for 1200. Of course that was in Buda which is south of Austin. But you might be able to get a 2bed in Austin for that much.
