Hello Austinites,

If commute is not a criteria..........

If all that is needed

is good school district
green earth
large backyard
$200k-$300k home
porch in the front
neighbor's window more than an arm's length away

then what area/neighborhoods/school district would you recommend in and around Austin?

Liberty Hill, Leander, Georgetown, Dripping Springs. What do you mean by "green earth", though? Do you mean good soil? And by "porch", do you mean sitting porch that you can rock on and wave at your neighbors as they go by? (That's what I was assuming.)

just helped some folks coming in from san diego find a place (and a good buy) out east of elgin -- 2400+ sqft, fairly new construction/floorplan, roughly an acre -- easy access to just about everywhere

TexasHorseLady, yes by porch I mean a porch out front where I can have my rocking chair or a swing for kids, but not necessarily wave at neighbors as they would be little far and the house would be set a distance away from the road. Green earth, meaning lots of landscaping on the property and neighborhood, green grass, trees, etc. I would also like kids to be able to walk to neighbors house or play with other kids on the street. Too much vehicular traffic on the street prevents letting the kids out by themselves.
Roy, east of elgin? I will look that up on the map.

We are a family of elementary school children and my husband works from home. I do want a very good school district but certainly don't have affinity to living close to downtown for job reasons. We want family oriented areas with trees.

Lots of trees, landscaping, green grass, house set distance from road, neighbors not at arms length, these are all aspects of estate type subdivision, or country living. Lots of that around Austin.

Kids can walk to neighbors, not a lot of vehicular traffic, this is more master planned community stuff. Smaller lots, some trees. Check out both types of communities before you decide. Each have their benefits, mostly linked to the ages of the kids. I find master planned communities down here are great if you have small kids. Teenagers work well in the estate divisions.

Okay, so you're talking about our place! (Front and back porches, quarter mile drive so I can see the road but waving would be a bit hard to detect, etc.) Our daughter DID walk to the neighbors' (or ride the horses there), when she lived at home. But we're on 55 acres out in the country, so probably not what you're looking for.

Try Leander or Georgetown or Liberty Hill. You might be able to find what you're looking for on half an acre to an acre there. Schools, you'll have to check out for yourself, because a school that is awesome for one kid can be awful for another, even within the same family, so it's pretty hard to tell what's going to be a good school for someone else's kids.

New house, old house? Size of house?
