In the past, I have coordinated with a local HEB or liquor store to pick up the boxes after they have unloaded their items at night when they restock. Liquor store boxes especially are good for your dishware, as they are made for heavier items. It may take a little more effort, but it saves quite a bit, boxes can get very expensive.

I ordered some specialty boxes from Uline but I lucked out since I live near their corporate office/warehouse and was able to pick them up for free. They are not really cheap but they have a really good selection of boxes. I will have to try a grocery/liquor store though. I didn't think about that, especially for breakables.

Try convenience stores also. Some beer boxes are pretty heavy duty.

Home depot had the cheapest ones if you decide to buy them. Usually under a dollar a piece.

We found great prices at Sam's Club and Lowes. Check out craigslist for free boxes too. Also, printer paper boxes are excellent boxes because they are small and strong. You can pack them with books but the box is small enough so as not to be too heavy. You can find lots of used printer paper boxes at Fedex/Kinkos and other print shops. If you are going to place printer paper boxes in storage though, I suggest reinforcing them with shipper's tape because the glue breaks down over time for easy destruction or recycle.

Most grocery stores and other similar sorts of stores will give you boxes for free if you set it up in advance. Never pay for boxes!

I have moved a lot and every time I use Walmart or Target. Mostly Target. Call Target around 9pm tell them you are looking for boxes if they can save for you...might need to ask for night mgr. Some Targets save a cart in guest services for you or have you come in as soon as the store opens and give you what they have. Some days are shipping/receiving days, they will let you know. And I always am extremely courteous and appreciative of the favor!

USPS will mail you a bunch of "decent" sized boxes for free. Good for books, smaller decor, and all of that other small oddball stuff around the house.

(Of course, USPS would prefer you use their branded boxes for their mailing services, but they'll get over it.)

Other than finding free ones, we have found Home Depot to be the lowest in price, though they may have just small, medium and large, and not a lot of specialty boxes.
