Although Austin is the best place in Texas - I lived there for a total of more than 20 years divided into two different stints - it's also in Texas. Moderator cut: P&OC

Ditto. Reason #1 why I would never live there. Too much 'tude, too much in love with itself for no good reason that I can see.
|
I'm not sure I understand why resentment exists toward local pride? Pride is a basic component of human need, whether it be community pride, pride in your children, your job, team pride, ethnic pride, your contributions to society, etc.
Extending the "too much 'tude" logic, I guess my daughter should say she doesn't like her high school because they have prep ralleys and are "in love with themselves". For sure, we should all think Longhorn fans are rediculous for their team pride ferver. Longhorn fans have "too much 'tude", along with every other college in the country.
"Round Rock" should change its name, because that actual Round Rock in the creekbed isn't much to behold or be proud of. There are no "falls" in Marble Falls - they got covered up when the lake was formed. And Austin calling itself the "live music capital of the world" is showing too much pride, even though we just had 65K people, including many from all over the country and the world, trapse here to hear live music.
Austin does in fact have a lot to be proud of, and there is nothing wrong with promoting it and showing pride. And it's not perfect, or the right place for everyone.

I have to agree with Steve - why on earth do people have such issues with pride in our state? Why don't they have equal pride in THEIR home state? What's it to them if we do?

I grew up in NY and am very proud of where I grew up (as are most other New Yorkers). One of the many reasons I was drawn to Texas was due to the local pride that exists here.

I have to echo these sentiments. We just moved down from Canada and my daughter is fitting in well in her new high school mainly because of the pride and school spirit that everyone shows. She has joined the drill team and has become totally caught up in the whole school spirit and participation aspect of everything. As she says, "its NOTHING like school spirit back home".
If you are proud of something and want to show it off you tend to become more involved and want to improve it. That is one thing I have always liked about Texas. People are proud of their state or city and will let you know. I don't see anything wrong with that.

What a weird thing to say! My husband is over 40, and he loves it here. Broad statements like "You won't like it here if you're over 40" aren't really helpful.
You might not like 6th St if you're "over 40" (but then again, you might) because (from what I hear... I haven't really seen it myself) it's mostly college kids getting drunk. But there's a LOT more to do in Austin than go to 6th St.
I think Austin IS fairly youth-oriented. Not necessarily age-wise, but in that there's a sense of vibrancy here.

I'm 41 and my wife is in her 30s (ahem). Last Friday we went to see Gnarls Barkley at Stubbs. The show was attended by college kids, parents with their children and folks that were clearly older than me (hooray). I didn't feel out of place at all and we had a great time. I've never felt out of place anywhere here in town.
Saturday night we were invited to one of my student workers 21st bithday party. We didn't go but I would have rocked it if I did.

Don't get me wrong, I love Austin. But I think some people, or at least my view is, that it's annoying to hear "Austin is better than"....(insert name of any other City or Town in Texas). I love and have tons of local pride and State Pride, but personally, think each place has it's own merits and no place is "better" than another.

I'm not sure why you don't understand how annoying it is to hear "Austin is the only place worth living in Texas," as if every other city in Texas is crap.
By the way, I'm a native Texan with very little state pride. Texas is one state out of many, and there are many parts of it I would never want to live in. I like living here well enough, but that's not to say there aren't 49 other states just as good or better. I have no problem with people liking where they live, but you shouldn't put down other places just because you prefer where you live. That's when the pride becomes excessive, and that's a turn-off to me personally and to people from other states. Don't bother telling me what I already know: Texans don't care what other people think.
