Depending on the regulations of your area, the question should be how long to water my yard rather than how often to water it. In certain cities you can only water on certain days of the week. You'll want to check before you set your sprinkler system to make sure you are complying. Long periods of watering every few days are supposed to be better than many days of short watering times.

You must have a pretty shady site, as few grasses would have survived a sunny site with no rain last summer. Even dormant grass needs some water.

I live in Pflugerville, AKA no large trees, with a large lot (1/3rd acre). I attempted watering until I got my first bill in the summer and then I quit. My grass definitely looks not so good sometimes, but ti did survive and come back from last summer's drought.

I have xeriscaping in front so none there. I have grass in back but it will have to survive own its own, Darwinian style, b/c its a waste of money and resources to keep it artificially green in this climate. If it turns brown it will come back when the rains come again.

Xeriscaping does NOT mean NO water.
