Default Best 'Ethnic' food in austin...

Some of my favorites...

Aster's Ethiopian
2804 N. I-35, Austin, TX
(512) 469-5966

Better ethiopian than anywhere in houston and dallas - a truly amazing dining experience if you've never had it before.

Jegimajo - Filipino grocery & food
2400 E Oltorf St # 12A, Austin, TX
(512) 443-2062

They just started serving food - the halo halo (filipino ice cream) is awesome.

Drakula Inc - Romainian
8120 Research Blvd # 104B, Austin, TX
(512) 374-9291

Eastern european peasant food! Very unique, and fairly tasty. Not much on atmosphere, though the power went out while we were eating.

Tons of indian/asian food in austin - anyone else have specific favorites or rare finds?

Haven't found any good Indian food here - actually haven't found any at all, good or bad, but haven't looked too far. Now that you mention it, I'd like to find a good one. I prefer casual - either buffet or cheap restaurant - maybe $10 - $12 per person for the food. I love Pasand which I used to go to in San Francisco and Berkeley. They have one in Dallas, but haven't traveled that far yet.

Any suggestions?

There's good gyros in the Randall's strip mall at Slaughter and Brodie. The place has a recognizably Greek name, but I can't think of it offhand. They have more Greek food there than just gyros, and I tried several things and didn't like any of them. The gyros were excellent and it was worth going just for them.

As soon as I saw the title to the thread, I thought Aster's! Yes, having a meal at an Ethiopian restaurant is an amazing experience and everyone should try it.

Other favorites: Din Ho for Chinese, Shalimar for Pakistani, Tam's Deli for Vietnamese, Arandas #3 for Mexican, Estancia for Brazilian, Reale's for Italian, Sarah's for Middle Eastern. I still need to go to Drakula though-- thanks for reminding me. I would love to find an Indonesian place, but so far, no luck.

p.s. What is Filipino food like, besides the ice cream?

Don't know if I know good from bad, but I sure like Madam Mams. They have a place on Guadalupe and one on Westgate (which is the one I am familiar with). Their website is slow as Christmas in July, but kinda cool...

Hoa My is one of the best mixed Asian--Vietnamese & Chinese--restuarants in Austin and is one of my fav places to eat:
13000 N I H 35, Austin, TX

Aquarelle Restaurant is one of Austin's premier gourmet restaurants offering authentically prepared French cuisine:
606 Rio Grande St
Austin, TX

Thumbs down on Thai Passion.
After leaving Atlanta's Thai restuarants, nothing has come close in Austin--Thai Passion nor KaProw (Howard Lane).
Thai Passion is expensive and does not even offer a spice tray.
KaProw is expensive and is only OK.

Mang Dedoy's Filipino is the best Filipino place so far in town:
8863 Anderson Mill Rd
Austin, TX
- Clean and a good choices and a $5.50 lunch menu (2 main, soup, and rice)

Din Ho is good, but it sometimes feels dirty...
Chinese BBQ offers similar food and it's located on Lamar & Braker Lane in the Asian square just a block South of the intersection.
