Hi,

How would you compare LA to Austin? What would you say are the pros/cons of the two cities? If you had to move, why would you choose one over the other? Thanks!

Here's a thread that talks about the differences and similarities:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/austi...austin-la.html

LA is a city, much like Chicago is a city with all the amenities a large city has to offer. Austin, while it has it's charm, is like an overgrown college town compared to those two. It all depends on what you are seeking. If you are looking for all the things a large city has to offer, you may be disappointed in Austin.

If Los Angeles is one of your choices, please go there instead. We don't need people who vote for higher taxes, more land use restrictions, and city councils who boycott other parts of the U.S.

Once again, you cannot possibly compare the two cities. They are in completely different leagues in everyway!

Other than both having large hispanic populations, Austin and Los Angeles have virtually nothing in common.

Please tell us what kind of living experience you're looking for (and why you're choosing between Austin and LA for that manner), and we can give you better advice.

I agree with most of the others, comparing LA and Austin is like comparing apples to oranges. Different sizes, different attitudes, different living experiences - and which would be best for you depends entirely on what you're looking for.

More info, please!

Los Angeles and Austin are two massively different cities, Austin's a college town while LA is an international city. I lived in both so here's the comparisons.

Los Angeles

Pros
- Mild Weather in the Winter(The average day in the winter is around 60-70 degrees)
- Diversity
- World Class Amenities(Only NYC is at LA's level)
- Better Food Options
- Beach is only a few miles away.
- Close to Big Bear if you like Skiing or Snowboarding
- Always things to do

Cons
- Traffic(Especially during Rush Hour. Some of the LA Freeways look like parking lots)
- Sprawled nature of the City
- Dangerous Areas. Ghetto culture
- Inefficent Public Transit
- Dirty looking
- The safest areas are expensive
- Huge contrast in wealth.

Austin

Pros
- Nightlife is more centralized(6th Street is where most of the nightlife is)
- Locals are more laidback
- Safer
- Cleaner
- More cohesive as a city
- Good music scene in a centralized area
-Good BBQ
- Because it's a college town. If your single, Beautiful women.

Cons
- Gets very humid in the Summer
- Inland location. The closest beaches(Galveston, Corpus Christi) are 3 hours away.
- Outside of Downtown. Mostly Suburban
- Inefficient Public Transit
- After 6th street. The city is pretty boring

If you are single. LA. If you have a family Austin.

of course you can compare the 2 cities. i lived in both. you can drive across austin in 30 minutes. it can take over 90 minutes to drive across LA, if you include the suburbs. weather is great near the coast. housing expense is ridiculous in LA. LA people seemed more superficial, and interest in what sort of car, or what zip code you are in. you see lots of tv and movie actors in LA. unless you make $250K or more, it is hard to have a decent qol in LA.
