The city gets mention in those top-10 lists because of marketing firms hired by the Chamber of Commerce. You're better off asking local residents for their perspectives.

Which marketing firms are these? Why don't other cities hire them, they are obviously doing an amazing job -- surely some other metros can afford them.

As a local resident (not single now, but was when I was 31, and in this city) -- I'd say Austin is an incredibly good city for singles. Unlike other cities in Texas, everyone isn't already married with children by 25. Probably the best age demographic is 21-35, and you are right in there. But honestly, I see more people of all age ranges at clubs here in Austin than I've ever seen in another city. Plus, 99% of places are so casual, you never feel under dressed (maybe sometimes the opposite). And that's what is important, IMO -- you need to feel at ease wherever you are. That's when your true personality comes out (hopefully it's a good one), and makes dating just that much easier.

But if you don't want to take a local resident's word, just come visit and see for yourself.

If your interests are spending most of your time getting drunk and partying with the UT crowd, then you'll love Austin!!

That is completely true. The city of Austin and the Chamber literally spend in excess of 25 million dollars every YEAR to promote this city. The top ten lists pretty mean nothing and shouldn't be taken seriously. Local residents opinion?? Well I think there are FAR better choices than Austin if you are looking for a well rounded city experience. OR if you have a family.

I love your screen name. I have often thought of changing mine to some variation of that. Looks like I waited too long!

How would you compare lifestyle of Austin to Houston or Dallas?

I don't drink at all. But if I was forced to live there I'd probably fall apart and be the exact same way in order to numb the frustration away.

Austin is Texas' drunkest city. Dallas is most sober. | Texas on the Potomac | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Being drunk is soooooooooooooo weird.
