Default Neighborhoods of SW Austin

How are the neighborhoods of Sunset Valley and the areas Southwest of it??

Are Crockett & Akins high schools good schools....How about the middle schools and elementary schools in the area? How do they rate.?..

Are there gang infested areas of Austin where the kids bring weapons and fight at schools where the teachers can't control it??

Thanks for the input

I don't have kids and don't remember seeing a school since I got here 2 years ago, but SW Austin is pretty safe. I also haven't seen a speck of graffiti in SW Austin or anybody that looks like a gang member. I'm from California so I'd recognize it if I saw it. Very peaceful place, SW Austin.

What is it you are looking for in a neighborhood or area? SW Austin is considered by many to be an excellent part of Austin. But whether that's true for you would depend on your specific wants and needs.

I look for solid schools from elementary to high school, pride of ownership in homes, good, laid back rapport with neighbors and neighborhood.... I've heard great things about the area but I've also heard the schools are inconsistent with the area

SW Austin is one the best areas in Austin. The area is very family oriented and it has a close knit community. The schools are also some of the best in Austin. There's more information about the neighborhoods and schools at oakhillgazette.com and ohan.org.

When I was in high school, we moved from Dripping Springs into Austin for a while. I would have gone to Crockett, but refused. A friend of mine attended for one day, being knocked out on her first trip down the hall way. I have heard of gang activity there. On the plus side though, one of my ex in laws went there and she turned out just fine. My experience there was about 12 years ago, and the ex IL is now in college, so things may have changed. I visit Cherry Creek often, and see nothing out of the norm for todays teens. Maybe my experince there was back when the "south side" was still more along the "poor" lines. Goodness knows we were.

If you work it where your child can get to Clint Small Middle school and Bowie High School you won't be going wrong. Your best bet is to be South of William Cannon and either just east or west of MoPac (Sendera Oaks, Villages/New Villages of Western Oaks still have some good values). Both of these areas feed Bowie High School. Good, sustained and controlled growth area.

If you're looking for bilingual education, then send your kids to Sunset Valley. That's a huge focus there. Crockett and Akins are not the best high schools in SW Austin. You'll want Bowie (or Austin High) for that area. Elementary schools--stick with Oak Hill, Patton, Mills and the Circle C elementaries south of Slaughter. Baranoff Elementary is good, but those kids will be at Bailey after the Circle C middle school opens in 2009, and what happens to Bailey then is anyone's guess. I'm pretty familiar with all of those schools--know people with kids in them, know people who work in them, lived in those areas for years. We're now in Dripping Springs, but if forced back into that area, we'd move into Circle C. I've been told by several people with kids at Bailey and teachers at Bailey that if Circle C were not at Bailey, they wouldn't want their kids there.

If you're from Cali, our gangs won't scare you. There is some gang activity in the Crockett and Akins areas, but it's not as noticeable as in other parts of Austin. Mainly drugs and theft.

If I was to move to Austin I'd look for a place along the MoPac on the southwest part of town. Beautiful, heavy traffic at times and my starving musician buddy lives off the MoPac and has a cool pad off Barton Skyway. If he can make it there anyone can. Very laid back, few thugs. I know nothing about the schools in the area but they are probably a notch or two above many other large-city schools in the state.
