Lived in San Diego for about a year and LA for six years. I can't say there are too many cities in California like Austin. I've always been a fan of San Diego because of the beaches and weather, but it's a pretty conservative city. Best off living in Ocean Beach or up north near Solana Beach area. If you move to LA then I would suggest Naples/Belmont Shores area or if you want Manhattan Beach. I still wouldn't pass up living in Austin - cost of living, music scene, art scene and there's always things to do. Also I wouldn't live in NoCal, it's definitely not like Austin at all.

I have enjoyed every one of my trips to San Diego. I think I like it more than any other city in California. SD doesn't have the arrogance of SF nor the blatant materialism and commercialism of LA. I think part of it must be due to the presence of the Navy base.

As usual though eepstein's take on Austin is completely unreal. Sometimes I think he must never leave Avery Ranch.

Austin doesn't look like a desert and everyone knows it. Mostly flat and treeless? eepstein must live in an alternate reality.

Austin night life is not 6th street. Once again anyone who actually goes out occasionally would know this. The most touristy night life might be 6th, but you can find happening events all over.

I leave AR everyday sir. Mostly to goto Dallas though!

You have obviously never seen real trees before. Try heading to the Woodlands and you will see what real natural trees look like. Austin only has short trees which look more like bushes. I suspect because of the horrible soil quality (mainly limestone), is why they grow so short. Yes, Austin is almost completely flat. It has some hills in the west part of the city however.

There is nothing to do in Austin except goto 6th street. The city is almost totally catered toward young college kids. That is what makes Austin such a horrible city for families. NOTHING to do but get drunk.

And who was the mentally challenged person who suggested that I move to San Diego??. Um, do you honestly think that if I had the opportunity to move there I wouldn't??? It hasn't come around yet.

eepstein - you have an incredibly narrow definition of EVERYTHING. So although I have seen majestic trees in Muir Woods in California and have been in beautiful forests in many other places, I find the big sturdy oaks in Austin very satisfying. But I guess the 2ft trunk oak in my front yard is just a bush to you.

Do you ever actually look for something to do? You don't seem to like live music, movies, food festivals, music festivals, water sports, bicycles, etc.?

Why do so many families seem to like it here even without a theme park, a zoo, or pro sports? You seem to have no clue.

There are those who make things happen, and those who sit around and complain while waiting for someone else to guide their life for them. Just sayin'.

Does the red text mean you're being facetious?

I think Sacramento is the closest California city to Austin.

Sacramento is a good comparison for the "feel" of the city, as in it's size and amenities, and regional importance (ie, somewhat in the shadow of much bigger cities in the state).

But the people, entertainment, and attitudes about local businesses seems a little more like the Bay Area to me. Less liberal, of course, but with a similar pride/self-importance and desired distinction (real or not) from the other cities in the state. Plus, you've got SV areas like San Jose which are quite typical strip-mall style sprawl... just occupied by techies instead of blue collar workers.

If you spent more time and energy working toward a positive goal (such as moving to a city where you'd be more happy) and less time and energy complaining about Austin, maybe you'd be in San Diego by now.

Back to the topic at hand:

I agree with others who say that Austin is most reminiscent of Sacramento. I'd also say that Austin has some elements of Silicon Valley (the hi-tech industry) and San Francisco (the rolling hills and the liberalism of Austin).

I don't see as many commonalities between Austin and San Diego. I'd say that San Antonio has more in common with San Diego since both are somewhat conservative, military-oriented cities with large Hispanic populations. I also see very little in common between Austin and Los Angeles. Anyone who's been to LA can tell you that it's very different from Austin.
