I've never experiences this before. A note came home that middle children had to get their spines screened. We then got a note saying we had to take one of the children to the doctor to have their spine looked at.

Wouldn't the doctor have noticed something wrong with their spine at the regular physical, (which they had less than a year ago)?

Are all the districts participating in this screening or is this something just for Hutto?

Why does this smell fishy to me?

We did this in 6th grade back in MI. It was scoliosis screening. I was told that I had one leg longer than the other, but no scoliosis.

All the districts do this, I remember having to do this 30 years ago. The only kids I know of that had physicals are the one that do sports.

Yup, everyone does it, even the private schools. I did it 30 years ago. It is simple, quick, non-invasive, and it does catch problems with scoliosis!

We did it when I was in Junior High School in California but I refuse to disclose how long ago it was.

I remember doing it in school and they never found anything. Now, it turns out I have severe scoliosis. Don't know when it started, though... I would have been glad to have had it caught back then, though. now I have bones fused together and there's nothing they can do other than make sure it doesn't get worse. Does the note tell you that you HAVE to take them to the doctor or you should? I can recommend an excellent chiropractor if you decide to have a check. In one year, he has fixed that section of my back by about 6%, which is great for a year considering I was in a major car accident in the middle of my treatment.

basically all that happens is that the nurse checks the posture of the student, checks the level of the shoulders to see if they ARE level, and the child/student bends over and the nurse checks the alignment of the spinal cord vertibrae--no xrays, no undressing--

if the nurse thinks that scoliosis might be possibility or actually is taking place they send note home with child...

Scoliosis symptoms - Screening
this web site says that all states have required school screening
the photo that is shown has the student/boy with his shirt off--

the info from CA public schools on this link
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/hn/docum...sscreening.pdf
says that they do require boys and girls to take their tops off and that girls should be encouraged to wear a sports bra on screening day...I thought there was no undressing--
girls are tested in 7th grade and boys in 8th
that written notice from parents is required TO NOT PARTICIPATE--so notice is sent home that says if parents object they have to sign and return to schools--
and it has to be in parents' language--Spanish/Chinese/Farsi--whatever if they don't read English...

I got screened in middle school but my scoliosis was not caught, nor was my kyphosis. I wish it had been.
