If I buy a house now, do I need to wait until next January to file for the Homestead Exemption? I guess for the 2011 tax year. Looking at the rules, it appears I've missed the deadline for 2010.

Thanks.

Yes, you will apply in January. You can get the form here on the Travis County Appraisal District website. After you buy your house, you may hear from people offering to do it for you for money - don't take them up on it, it's a scam, and it's a VERY simple procedure to apply for it, and it's free.

Also, if you buy a house that already has a homestead exemption on it, it will remain for the rest of the year so you will still get a tax break. Keep in mind you don't have to do this Jan 1. You will have until April 30 so don't think you must remember exactly at the first of the year.

I sent mine in this year. Is there a site where it's logged in? How do i know they received it? Also, do i have to send it in every year?

If you look up your home on the traviscad.org or wcad.org it will have "HS" under the exemptions if they have received it (and entered it in).

You don't have to do it every year. The homestead exemption will stay until you 1)sell the house or 2)move out and notify them that it's a rental

Question, because I am buying a home that already has the homestead, and above in the forum, Falconheadwest states when the house sells, it stays with the house and you get the tax break anyway and come Jan I can apply as the new owners, but atxico above states the homestead exemption stays until you sell the house...so now I am confused...because these answers kind of counter one another or I am reading it wrong..please advise..and thank you very, very, very much.
