I don't think any city should be like Portland. All nice and pretty to your face, but oh when you move there, taxes, taxes, and even more taxes. Then try getting help from a local and they'll be like "why do you live here if you don't know about the city?"...

That's just my experience, IMHO.

That's my experience in Austin. Horrible people offended by my friendliness everywhere.

How is the bike riding in winter when the roads are iced over or covered with snow?

Percentage wise Portland only comes in at only 3.5% which is nowhere near Amsterdams 40% or Copenhagens 35%.

1.Davis,CA comes in at 20%
2.Boulder,CO comes in at 10%
3. Portland, OR comes in at 3.5%(The highest percentage of any large city in America)

Mass transit would work wonderfully in Austin. Think of all the headaches on I-35 that could be prevented? How much nicer the commute! Please get a rail system in Austin. It's one thing that would make an already awesome city even better!!!

It is not your friendliness that is offensive.

Yes, given the level of honesty, support, pleasantness, maturity, non-judgmentalism, and graciousness that you constantly exhibit here in the Austin forum, it's quite a puzzle as to why your "friendliness" isn't embraced everywhere, isn't it?

I find people in Austin to be very friendly.
I find the same in Portland.
So maybe it is something about each of us, that triggers some sort of response from those we deal with.

I had a higher quality of life in Portland, mainly due to transportation. I could get places reasonably quickly. I didn't mind the rain, it is easy to dress for.
Ice didn't occur that often, and it was easy enough to adjust my lifestyle to not need to go places when it was too icy to go safely (via foot and bus).

I do remember once when I was a kid, Portland had this awesome silver thaw which lasted several days. It was great fun for the kids, and a great pain for the grownups.
I was a kid, I only remember the fun part.

It does snow sometimes, but rarely lasts. It is best to stay home when it snows. It doesn't snow often enough for the population to be very skilled at driving in the stuff. I do recall seeing a few people on bicycles in the snow. I thought that was rather risky behavior.

I like the winter weather better in Austin, however, I would rather live through the winter in Oregon, than the summer in Austin.
(Although maybe it is premature for me to make such a statement, since I have not yet lived through a summer in Austin).

I was raised, in Portland, by Hippies.
