Seems to me the Kiwis are "anti" many countries :

- anti British because it was the former colonial power
- anti French because of the Rainbow Warrior incident and the nuclear trials in the Pacific Ocean (I can relate to that somehow...)
- anti Australian because Australia is the "rival brother" of NZ
- anti German and anti Japanese because they fought against them during WWII
- anti Russian because NZ was part of the ANZUS pact during the Cold War
- anti ?????????
I'm starting to wonder : do the "Kiwis" love some other countries besides their own?
Somalia, Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia maybe ?
You can say the same about many other countries as well. I now live in the US and I have heard a lot of anti other countries sentiments here.

New Zealand is small and isolated and really, apart from the major cities, is parochial in nature.

One of my well, traveled kiwi friends says it's a self esteem issue with themselves as a country. Because it is such a small country far away from anywhere people are a bit self conscious about that.

And I have to agree because dealing with Kiwis they seem to take it personally if different accomplishments of NZ are credited to other countries and they are very worried often what you think of the country.

Yes that's a good observation.

There are also a few inventions that have been misappropriated by Kiwis who genuinely think they were the first to make them. Probably due to their isolation - they simply don't realise that some things have been done before.

I laughed today at another headlining example of "Kiwi ingenuity" - A couple put a hidden camera in a house to see who was nicking tens of thousands of dollars hidden behind a drawer.

$36k thief nabbed with Kiwi ingenuity - Crime - NZ Herald News

Who on earth would think that using a camera is an uniquely ingenious Kiwi trait? and how 'ingenious' was it hiding a large sum of cash in such a stupid place?

If you are in the immigrant group which can afford decent housing in a nice suburb and make a good salary then taxes and cost of living will not be such an issue .... these people tend to like it here.
I guess it also depends on where you are coming from. Coming from Texas, NZ's cost of living will seem expensive (exception property tax which is very reasonable).
If you are used to San Francisco or NYC cost of living ....then perhaps you won't think NZ is too expensive
Seattle. That is where we would be coming from.

Maybe you should contemplate a different state instead of a different country.
When I was there, I saw no anti-American sentment there. There were very nice people there. We always felt welcome there.
New Zealand and Scotland, IMO had the most nicest people that I have ever met!

Maybe no coincidence since NZ had such a large influx of Scottish migrants? Especially compared to Australia (which still had plenty, but more English and Irish as a proportion). Maybe it explains their reserved character?

Wherever you go there you are.

If NZ was that good the population would be rapidly growing. But it's only 4,3 million with the prediction of 5,3 million by 2050. Why do you think NZ gov't keep luring people from all over the world through posting opinions of those who have spent less 6 months in there? Because nobody from 1st world countries wants to move to the land of kiwis. It's DOWNSHIFTING unless you are an asian. No offense to the latter.
PLease, stay where you are. You say you are from Seattle? Take a look at another states.

PS You better ask Kiwis how bad want to move to the US.
PSS The officials will not tell you that thousands are leaving NZ for good per month.

Stay in the country long enough and you'll find it that's for sure.

There is a big difference between touring a country and establishing residence in one.

I don't mean to put you off, I'm simply giving an opinion based on the fact I lived there all my life.

I got a bit more involved due to sporting endeavors and suspected some anti american behavior on the part of some once they realized my nationality. But on the other hand, many random people helped me out that didn't have to. Many were bemused an American would be interested in coming down there and mucking about with them.

In my experience, I think any anti americanisms come from our media. The only thing many untraveled kiwis have to go on about americans is what they have seen on TV or in movies, so I have found many times they are expecting the type of characters they see on TV.
