Share your memories of shopping in Australia and New Zealand. What were the shops/shopping centres (malls) like, how did they differ from those today? What are some memorable shopping trips/things you bought?
I remember sunken atriums with plastic plants, cafeterias in K-Marts, shopping malls had more gaudy linoleum-type furnishings, bird-cages in shopping centres. My local shopping centre Garden City, Booragoon was renovated twice since my early memories of it in 1989. I recall how I'd get so excited over just going there, I remember mum taking us to the library...I remember seeing Batman Forever and eating McDonalds when they opened the Food Court and Cinema, and I recall when the video arcade left.
I remember the Toys'r'us in Perth City which they tore down, and how that was like some kind of Wonderland. I remember actually seeing movies in the CBD, which was possible until a few years ago.
Today the malls look so generic and there are fewer individual type stores outside the inner city areas. Shopping in Perth is better but the experience itself is a bit duller.
