Ironically, Queenstown is still warmer in winter than Canada's mildest winter cities or towns.

Nothing ironic about that. Queenstown isn't even that high (about 400m asl from memory, but I could be wrong). The Aussie ski centres are all over 1500m and in the snowfields. Queenstown itself is mostly snow-free in winter.

Be interesting to see which host cities of the winter Olympics are actually mostly snow-free. Vancouver would be an obvious one, any others? I didn't expect Sarajevo to be that snowy either.

357m just to be exact

Queenstown is mostly snow free, I'm guessing they get a least 4 snow days per year in which they receive 2cm or more of snow, none of which hang around for more than a few days.

The biggest obstacle to me would be needing to host the Games during off-season for most international winter sports.

I always thought the biggest obstacle to having the winter games in the Southern hemisphere was that the Games would have to be held in July or August. And, if they were going to be held below the equator, some kind of combo Chile/Argentina bid (if that's possible) might be more likely than NZ simply because, while the South American countries are far from Europe, they're closer to North America.

The Olympics including the winter Olympics are big white elephants in recent decades with costs ballooning and interest declining. Probably doable but just don't feel the return would be worth it.
