I have just woken up and read the report. I'm sitting here crying over our beautiful Christchurch and the 65 people dead so far with others still trapped or missing.

I don't have any family there but I love that city.

NZ sits directly along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the system of faults/volcanoes that border the east coast of Asia and the west coast of North and South America where the tectonic plates bump up against each other. Here's the map:

Australia doesn't sit directly on a plate boundary but -- just as there are quakes in the middle of the US, far from the plate boundaries on the west coast -- quakes can happen in Oz though they tend to be fewer and not as destructive. But there was a fairly strong one in Newcastle in 1989.

FV here sending thoughts and prayers to those affected. I've never been to CC but have seen pictures and videos. Such a tragic thing to have happened (twice!) to a beautiful city.

The videos and the stories coming out of there are just heartbreaking. The despair and terror on the survivors' faces just ripped into me. I can't watch any more of them.

RIP to the people who lost their lives. All the best to the survivors.
