Its not just one wine region outside ADL.. you also have the McClaren Vale, the Limestone Coast and the Adelaide Hills. The OP mentioned he wanted options other than what is what is mainly seen by tourists.
Best thing about Adelaide is as mentioned by Waneroo.. few days in Kangaroo Island to see wildlife and a few days up in the Flinders Ranges to get a taste of the outback. There is fishing to be had off Port Adelaide and shopping in the city.. though they are in for a shock at prices in Australia. There are even pandas to check out at the local zoo.

Yes, I've been in Fresno and well no disrespect to those that live there, but it's not a happenin place.
I don't know how someone could compare Fresno with Adelaide.
I think a lot of people like to pick on Adelaide but it's got a lot going for it in the local area.

It was a relative comparison, not a direct comparison.

To be honest mate, 10 days is not a long time to go to either Australia or New Zealand and do them justice. My advise would be not to try and do too much..decide whats most important and choose from there.
Dec/Jan will be hot in Aussie, milder in NZ but could be hit or miss in terms of spending time on the beaches as the weather has been all over the place these last few summers! Can do fishing in either country, shopping - better to stick to the main cities. Not sure where in the States you are from so not sure whether you are looking for something different to home, or something similar.
I live in the South Island of New Zealand, if you want some info on this neck of the woods let me know and I can point you in a few directions. Seems you have plenty of time to decide where you are going anyway.
