Certainly it seems the most expensive place in the country. Surley they have cheap Asian sit down resteraunts in perth, where you can fill yourself up for less than $10?

If you don't want to order a drink,
I know a great place for a gut-buster-sized portion, great quality, pretty healthy too with lots of "veg" added as well.

I'm sussing out all the places here with the best food and best deals.

At the lunch the other day, others at the table ordered the chicken. It was just a chicken breast with a bit of satay-like sauce on top and nothing else. Just a few green leaves that were more decoration than substance.
That would be business-suicide in Canada.

I don't think it's usually that bad in Bunbury.
Maybe the restaurants are just lazy in Perth...
or trying to encourage people to diet?

I still know several places to get my fill of tasty, quality food for under $20 in various parts of Perth. Hehehehe.

That would be a higher end restaurant in Perth...I've never been to a place where they a steak doesn't come with a side, but I can imagine in some of the posher places you order each element separately.

Plenty of places sell steaks: the usual price in my experience is $20-40, but mostly they are average to just good. Anything below $20 is probably small cuts or a thin tenderloin/minute steak or lunch portions, and anything above $40 is getting to be a ritzy establishment or a really choice cut of meat. A good quality Angus or Wagyu steak can go for that much or more. I rate Hog's Breath Cafe very well for a more middle of the range place, eaten there a few times. Once I got a rib-eye from Outback Jack's and was very dissapointed with the tiny morsel of meat I got and the small portion of chips. Two places that have a more 'chain' feeling to them.

My experience is the regional towns and cities are just as bad as Perth.

That's my experience, the further up you go the less you get. I can get the $12 steak at Bondi Diggers with mash, fries and salad included and it's a huge serving. I went to the Cut in the Rocks a few weeks ago and my steak came with nothing but my meat (4 hour slow roasted Wagyu standing rib, delicious!). A friend of mine was at Aria in Brisbane last week, his steak was $65 and then they charged $9 for mushroom sauce, which seems a bit excessive.

You can tell those sort of places if they're advertised as a 'gourmet' or 'specialist' steakhouse. Japanese steakhouses, for instance, sometimes charge exhorbitant prices (same with high end Japanese food in general). The other states all seem to have places, whether they be hotels/pubs, hole-in-the-wall eateries or cafes, that have steak specials for $7-$10. Sure, they are not the choicest cuts of meats but often you can get a tasty, decent meal, with a generous serving of chips/baked potato and salad or cooked greens that will definitely fill you up. Sometimes they throw in a pint of a budget drop they have on tap, but all in all it's a satisfying belly-filler that both locals and tourists grab up. I've yet to see a decent steak special for less than $12-15 here.
