Im Moving to Melbourne from NZ. I'm finding it quite scary as Im doing it by myself. Im not sure where to start.

How do I go about finding a job overseas before I go? (even if its just the tasman )

where do I want to live or want to avoid?

Its a total fresh start for me so I dont know any people in Melbourne at all. So will want to meet new people (Come out of my shell ....just a tad shy lol) wheres the best place to meet good people?

Hello AlyNZ,

Things will be okay, just be careful on who you're friends will be. Jobs are a little off, but for a good finder it'll be a breeze. Best on the move, see ya in Melbourne

cheers

Joining the Kiwi hoards, aye?

Since there are no immigration restrictions between our two countries you could just come over here and start searching right away, as if you were Australian, keeping in mind that some jobs do require you to be a permanent resident. You could get your permanent residency and then spend some time in Melbourne, maybe a few months, looking for a job, perhaps in the meantime doing any sort of work to finance yourself.

As for meeting people, it's the same as NZ or anywhere else in the world. Just get out and about, whatever your scene is. Melbourne has a ton of bars and cafes, so if you hang out long enough you're bound to meet people. Melburnians can be surprisingly friendly, so just be yourself. Although it seems like quite a respectable, dignified city the people aren't as snobby as you would think.

If you don't have a car I would recommend you live in one of the inner suburbs. There are tons to choose from, and for what you get Melbourne is pretty affordable.

I'm hoping to move there myself at the end of the year.

for jobs go to www.seek.com.au
anyway if you want to meet people an good site would be meetup.com
I used to live in Melbourne and I used to attend an rockclimbing group on meetup.com and met some cool people there. There are many other groups on meetup.com in melbourne.

for employment as mentioned seek.com.au they also have a list of agencies etc
for rental check out realestate.com.au or domain.com.au
for public transport go to metlinkmelbourne.com.au
what part of melbourne are you looking at? which side of the yarra river?
a hint is to check out the council websites of the areas you are looking at they give great info on your area
also do some google searches on the local newspapers online as well as check out the crime rates.
what area are you looking at? let me know and I can help you more
p.s did you know that it is mandatory that you must go for collingwood magpies? well that is now a prerequisite for moving to melbourne (true honest) lol

New Zealanders can't just get Permanent Residency. There are very strict criteria for it depending on when you entered the country and what type of job you have.

Hmmm not really too sure about the price, don't really know what is a good price for a weekly rental, I spose roughly $200-250 a week to start off with until I get settled.
