Maybe it would taste good over rice? Does it taste like a thick heavy soy sauce?

You can buy it at World Market in the bay area. Give it a try. If whole foods is closer, and you seem to shop there, they sell marmite which is close enough.

Oh and someone in Australia gave me a haggis once. They'd bought it at David Jones, as if that was some kind of badge of honour. I kept it in the fridge for 12 months before I threw it out with Monday's garbage. In all that time I couldn't work up the courage to eat it.

I loved seeing 'mite at your wedding! Not too many people I spoke to hated it. Have you tried the cheesybite that you bought a few weekends ago (yet)?

Considering that Americans tend not to like Vegemite, do Australians not like peanut butter? I wonder if that's also an aquired taste.

It is reasonably good for you - it's very high in B vitamins. It's certainly no worse than any other sandwich spread. Yes, Australians do genuinely love vegemite. We go through several jars a year.
I really think it's an acquired taste - a bit like beer, for example, which lots of people seem to love despite the fact it tastes (to me) just as vile as what I can only imagine horse **** tastes like. I think you need to eat it a few times before it grows on you. You also need to spread it thin, but then most Australians can eat it right from the jar. If you slather a roast chicken or turkey in vegemite and butter it tastes absolutely amazing.
We do have peanut butter and eat it often, too. We also eat peanut butter and jam sometimes, or peanut butter and honey.
