Default Melbourne rated the world's most liveable city...again

Melbourne rated world's most liveable city in Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Survey
Wes Hosking Herald Sun
August 14, 2012 4:40PM

UPDATE: MELBOURNE has been crowned the world's most liveable city for the second year running, with the city's Lord Mayor cashing in on the award to springboard a bid to host the Olympics.

And in another coup for southerners unassuming Adelaide has overtaken Sydney in the fiercely contested rankings.

Melbourne outperformed 140 rivals to receive the Global Liveability Survey gong with a near perfect score of 97.5 per cent.

It only lost points for climate, culture and petty crime.

Sydney dropped one place despite an unchanged score while Adelaide rocketed three places to joint fifth thanks to infrastructure improvements.

Perth was ninth, down one place.

How many people actually undertook this survey? From what I've seen and heard, Melbourne is the one jumping up and down whereas Sydney folk don't care which speaks volumes...

That doesn't speak volumes at all, what a ridiculous comment. If you get overtaken by Adelaide and finish 8th or 9th, that's hardly an excuse to get excited. Haven't you heard the saying Sydney loves a winner. Bottom line is the Sydney folk don't care because they didn't finish top. The winner usually will jump up and down and that just happens to be Melbourne.

Im not surprised to see MEL so highly ranked. But I'm also quite pleased to see that as a former Adeladian, it has also doing so well. I don't care that it beat Sydney...
I always thought ADL would be a good city for someone with a good job and kids. Easy commutes, good wine and food, lots of cultural events/festivals.

There are numerous organizations that give out this "award" - the Economist is only one of them.
Obviously they try to use objective criteria though, so there is always some credence in these results.
It is certainly not persuasive though as to where people would live or relocate to, as most individuals have many other factors keeping them where they are, and in the same geographical area.
But on a positive note, all Australian cities seem to fair well in these surveys.

Yep ~ the EIU is one of a few.

From their website:

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s liveability rating quantifies the challenges that might be presented to an individual's lifestyle in 140 cities worldwide. Each city is assigned a score for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories:
  • Stability
  • Healthcare
  • Culture and environment
  • Education
  • Infrastructure
Well done, Melbourne ~ again.

Who even pays attention to these rankings?

I doubt anyone will move to Melbs simply because some magazine ranked it no 1 most livable...they don't need such a reason, it's such a great place to live in. Sydney is too. And it's subjective, too. For someone who loves lounging on the beach then Sydney will be more 'livable' for them.

Adelaide like Perth is a very nice, comfortable, conservative sort of place. Like a big park, I think. Brisbane actually feels more like a real city rather than a big country town, and Perth is pulling away from ADL.

Yeah but for a conservative place, South Australia was the first state in Oz to:
1. decriminalize (spel?) gay sex (1975)
2. offical nude beach (1975)

Also on Victoria Square, Adelaide, in 1971 was the first time the aboriginal flag was flown on a state capital.

So it has the veneer of conservativeness.. but not quite.

It probably scores highly due to lack of crazy traffic jams, good affordable schools, nice beaches, and lots of cultural events/festivals throughout the year. There was enough to keep this former NYer occupied.

But tru that Trimac.. I'm sure another survey will come along with different rankings of the cities.. so I wouldn't take too much credence in the results..
