Australia called on the world to match its tough new anti-tobacco marketing laws that will ban logos on cigarette packs, after its highest court on Wednesday dismissed a challenge from global manufacturers.

The decision means that from December 1, cigarettes and tobacco products must be sold in plain olive green packets with graphic health warnings, such as pictures of mouth cancer and other smoking-related illnesses.

Won't stop people from smoking, as it is addictive.
The money spent on this court battle could have been better spent eslewhere.

And the cigarette case business is about to explode! Back in yesteryear, people seemed to keep their cigarettes in a case, often discarding the packaging in which they came.

I think the intention is to make it less attractive to young people taking it up, rather than trying to stop those already addicted. I'm not saying it will be effective but surely it can't be a bad thing.

Interesting read for anyone curious about why the government may be liable for billions in compensation.

Except the High Court just said that the government is not acting unconstitutionally.

Won't be suprised if they take it to the international court.

My first reaction was against this, I.e free market, ability to sell a legal product... Then I remembered how dirty this industry is, how they try to market to kids. If it stops younger people from taking it up, then good.

Meh, I'll believe the government will actually cough up in the WTO when I see it. This is such a politically unpopular industry all over the world that it's unlikely anyone would kick up a stink, tobacco industry aside.

Maybe I'm wrong.
