I believe this re-opening of the prostitution debate is a good idea. I do believe it should be about women's health and safety. Like the above article says, it's about women having control over their own bodies, instead of men having all the control. In this sense, its similar to the abortion debate in the US. It seems when it comes to having control over their own bodies, women really have to fight for their rights.

Yeah but let's not act like the majority of men are forcing women into prostitution (not saying it doesn't exist in a minority of cases) or getting them pregnant. Don't act like women are like helpless children, they're adults, they know the consequences of their actions.

Women are not stupid, the huge majority of these girls who see ads for big paying jobs as "Models" "Dancers" or "Escorts" in rich countries would know exactly what they are getting themselves into.

There is definitely a portion who know full well what they're doing, and do it for the $$. They make that choice.

There is also the element of forced prositution, or getting mixed up in the industry via drug abuse, under-privileged etc

of course, working for an illegal brothel makes it a little difficult for authorities to control and ensure that the workers health & safety is adhered to.

Best way to have control over your body? Don't work in a brothel.

I still believe prostitution in Australia is still largely, like the comment said in the 'Re-opening the prostitution debate' article, about men making decisions about women's bodies. Hopefully, this will go the way of the abortion debate in the US, where many women voted for the party that has more pro-women policies, when it comes to women making decisions about their own bodies.

Like Holly InAlbury said, 'As a sex worker, I see many ways to make the industry safer. I also see and hear a lot of my peers making suggestions on how to do this, but it always falls on deaf ears. It reminds me of the abortion debate going on over in the USA. Men making decisions for women's bodies.'

It also involves controlling what men can do with their bodies as well.

On a side note, I would like to congratulate American women for voting for the party that supports women's right to make decisions for their own bodies, and that were against the 'War on Women.' Go, sisters!

I'm also glad they won but I think phrases like the 'war on women' are just used to stir people up. I don't think the laws would change much either way.

I also think a big part of the problem is Australia is far too socially conservative, when it comes to women's issues. Sweden is far more socially progressive, thus they came up with the 'Swedish model,' regarding prostitution. Whereas here in Victoria, for example, the socially conservative politician Jeff Kennett legalised brothels, without ensuring prostitutes are entitled to occupational health and safety rights. It just makes it more convenient for men to use prostitutes, and it clearly hasn't stopped the sex trafficking of girls from Asia. It also hasn't stopped the sex tours of Australian men in Asia: http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-...h-hiv-hookers/
