Voted for Perth on this list, has everything a family could need, plus great climate and lifestyle.
Not sure why Newcastle is not on the list, but the Gold Coast is - which is closer to, and more intimately tied to Brisbane than Newcastle is to Sydney, have a look at Australia's cities listed by population:

Hobart and Darwin are actually Numbers 11 and 15 respectively.

Melbourne for me. Slight downside climate but it's not as bad as people make it out to be, only by Australian standards.

Depends on your criteria. Been to them all except Perth and Hobart. Tough call for me between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Im pretty sure that most Aussies would be surprised to learn that Darwin is about the same size as Toowoomba.

I am biased and would vote for Brisbane, although Darwin and the Gold Coast are the only other cities on the list ive spent a significant time period in, and ive never being to Adelaide, Perth or Hobart.

I think I'd be fairly content living in or nearby any of the larger Australian cities, but Melbourne is my favourite. I love the trams and the city's atmosphere in general.

If Sydney was in the UK its population would be 169,505 (I think correct me if I'm wrong)

Manchester in the UK has a population of 502,900 but Greater Manchester has a population of 2,682,500. So whos right judging populations?

So if we use your logic, Brisbane is Australia's largest city because it has the largest city council:

City of Brisbane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The definition of city limits is always open to debate, but would normally include all the infrastructure and suburbs that are dependent on that city.
Sydney thus has well over 4 million people, the only thing that is debateable is whether the Central Coast should be included in the Greater Sydney population - I don't think it should but many articles include it.
Eventually I believe Brisbane and the Gold Coast will form one big contiguous city, and the population in SEQ will probably surpass Sydney and Melbourne -but not yet.
The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are easily the fastest growing cities in Australia which will eventually merge into Brisbane - which along with Perth are the fastest growing capital cities in Oz.

Well if we use your logic London has 15-18 million, or even more, from 8million. Glasgow, Manchester would be over 2million from around 600,000. And Liverpool and Leeds would have over a million. I'm not sure been dependent on a city or commuting in, makes you part of the city.
