I had a talk to some colleagues about Melbourne (we are in Sydney) everyone agreed it was a nice place. Shortly after, I talked to two guys from Melbourne (both working in Sydney). One said he wanted to go back, the other proceeded to call New South Welsh people 'cockroaches' and how besides the harbour, Sydney was a dump. He said he was taking his girlfriend there for Christmas to see if she would move there.

Why do they hate us? Look at these sites:

We were delighted to see FACEBOOK's Melbourne is better than Sydney group with over 84,730 members in July 2010.

A few of the top reasons.. Better and cheaper food, nicer people, Arts and Entertainment culture, International Melbourne Comedy Festival, Moomba, CBD easier to navigate, trams not lightrail, Crown Casino kicks Star City's ass and the Melbourne Cup!

Melbourne -v- Sydney

I'm not getting into the whole rivalry thing, as I actually think Melbourne is nice (although I don't like the culture of drinking indoors, or the cold and I need a beach) but it is still an OK place. But it just seems there is a lot more interest in highlighting Melbourne's good points than we do here. Why?

Do you really take that stuff seriously?

I think the ribbing has to do with the fact that for a long time it was ribbing the other way ~ "the rust bucket state" "bleak city" etc and since the recession of the 1990's Melbourne/Victoria has changed in many ways (mostly positive)... so its now {our} turn to rib ...

Here we go again, haha. Yeah i'm sure many Melburnians secretly go up to Sydney for the beaches.etc, they just won't admit it. Actually the rivalry is like the LA vs SF, it seems mostly one way, with the more 'intellectual/cultural' city hating on the more corporate and glamorous city. Maybe part of it is jealousy (look at us here!) since Sydney has hogged the limelight for a long time now. Also there are some genuinely negative aspects to Sydney, I find. I find the vibe in Melbourne just friendlier, Sydney has the bad aspects of a big city. I've never been pushed on the escalator here or in Melbourne, or my friend was told to '**** off' just for asking directions. I know Melbs had it too but it just seems Sydney has a lot more drug-addicts and general 'low-lifes' (excuse the term, I don't think their lives are any worse but using a common phrase). It has more of a rich-poor gap, and rich people in Sydney seem among the most snobbish in Oz (I'm sure the same goes for Melbourne though).

Visitors I've met and people from other cities also seem to say they prefer Melbourne. I genuinely believe Melbourne is doing more to improve itself, though. Ask this question 15 years ago and you'd probably get a different answer. From all accounts I hear the place was a bit of a dump in the early 90s.

Perhaps some confirmation bias there.

After the Olympics, Sydney stopped doing pretty much anything for a decade. I think the state government is a bit more awake now. The new convention centre that was recently announced, the development of Barangaroo and the new light rail system are all steps in the right direction. Ultimately, this state needs more cities because Sydney is full.

I agree. We need to stop focusing so much on the metro areas, they've become these huge giants that just dominate the state. QLD is at least not so dominated by Brisbane. The Hunter Valley region should be developed, I'd like to see Newcastle with over 1 million becoming one of the major cities in the nation.

Hmm I don't know about that. While I can recall an Irish girl telling me she preferred Melbourne, I've also been told by foreign people that Melbourne didn't live up to the hype. (not to get into the debate, just to share a different experience. I don't want to be told by aggressive Melbournians how the coffee is better/buildings are prettier/bar scene is better/apples are greener/tacos are tastier ect)

Until a few years ago i didn't think Melbourne had much 'hype.' Most tourists don't seem to see Melbourne as being very 'hyped' up, they always see Sydney on tourist's ads etc.

I will agree some Melburnians are a bit touchy about it. Many don't take it very seriously, though.

I didn't think Sydneysiders cared much. This thread has proved me wrong.

Nobody in Sydney really cares

I work with a lot of people from interstate so this regularly comes up on my radar more than the average Sydneysider - which is probably never
