Alright, so, im planning a move to Melbourne from the USA. Been thinking of cities to live in the US and nothing is really getting me excited.

questions for whoever knows. Ill be moving to Oz in their (or "your") depending on who im talking to. How will the weather in Melbourne be?

How is Melbourne for gay people?

what are good areas to live?

where are areas to stay away from?

is it relatively safe?

is it possible to live there without a car?

fill me in with whatever knowledge of the city you have thanks!

The biggest thing you need to consider is how much you want to spend on rent per week - that'll determine the rest of the answers

I spent 6 months in Melbourne several years ago. It is a great place to live and there are areas where it is possible to live without a car there.

Be prepared for sticker shock, MEL isn't cheap. go here to get an idea of rents (rents quoted are by week, in the US rents quoted are by month)
Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au

Good place to find flatmates (Aus version of craigslist)
http://www.gumtree.com.au/

I think most of your MEL questions can be found by doing an Advanced Search on CD

Check out the BOM, Bureau of Meteorology - Home Page, for reliable weather forecasts, long-term forecasts and climate averages.

Melbourne is a tolerant city with a sizable gay community. I've seen same-sex PDA's in public and no one batted an eyelid.

It depends on what lifestyle you want and your budget.

Some of the northern and western and far eastern suburbs have a bad rap, but sometimes I think it's exaggerated.

Yes, Melbourne is relatively safe, especially compared to most American cities.

Yes, as long as you're not out in the outer suburbs. There are trams, trains and buses.

I actually plan to move there myself, soon. It's a great city, plenty of culture, great food, nice and green, very walkable, diverse. I hope to move in one of the inner suburbs, such as North Melbourne, Fitzroy, Carlton, South Melbourne.etc.

Ok, if you want to live close to the city, with that rent you'll have to share /rent a room.., as posted gumtree & I think domain advertise rooms for rent (www.domain.com.au)

In terms of areas, st kilda, fitzroy, Windsor/prahran, & surrounding suburbs would be your best bet... You won't need a car and these areas are quite diverse

Melbourne's a great city. You'll have a good time. I assume you have a job lined up or some way to support yourself and have met all the visa requirements a Yank needs to move there?
