Study abroad and part-time work? (job market, university, minimum wage)

Hey all! I'm an American student looking to study abroad in Australia for a year. My University offers programs throughout Australia but I would most likely choose between Brisbane and Melbourne. I understand that there is a possibility of working part-time with a student visa and I was wondering what the job prospects were like. Would it be easy to find work as an International student, especially considering the fact that the visa puts a limit on the number of hours I am allowed to work? I would need the money to help pay for living expenses. I know this question is quite broad, I would just like to learn more about the potential of finding a part-time job before I make the decision to go. Thanks in advance.
You could always get the Working Holiday visa, which would enable you to work as much as you want. Although I'm not sure of the terms if you were to use that in combination with a student visa.
What are your skills? What extra paperwork or restrictions are there for an employer compared to hiring a local? These are all factors in the job market.
I don't know what restrictions the student visa has, but I am fairly certain that you cannot combine visa types, eg working holiday. Also, I don't think that Australia has a working holiday visa arrangement with the USA, apart from specific programs.

Australia does have a working holiday visa for Americans. It's quite easy to get and do. But I have no idea if you are able to combine it with a student visa.
It appears that the visas cannot be combined so I would be stuck with a student visa and limited to 20 hours a week. Im guessing this could pose a problem to potential employers which is something to consider. As far as skills go I am still a student and have only held part time jobs in restaurants and in retail. I would just be looking for a minimum wage job in the service sector. Thanks for the help! Hopefully I can find more information on this. (:
I'm new here and am thinking about the same topic at the moment. The difference is that I'm from Europe and my native language is not english. Also I do have more than 5 years (part-time) working experience in different workplaces (administration/marketing/sales).
I have been expecting to only be able to find a job in service, but I have met some Australians this summer and they were all telling me it would be easy for me to find a job in an office.
What do you think? Will I find such kind of job even though my english is not perfect and I'll only be able to work part time? A working holiday visa is no option for me as we don't have an agreement with Australia.
If not, is it easy to find a job in service?
(I'll stay in Brisbane and study at the Griffith University for one semester, I'm studying business communication)
