Australia has only a few species of deciduous trees, the vast majority of our forests stay green in the winter and don't lose their leaves, which is probably a good thing, except no fall colours. There are, not surprisingly, a lot of imported deciduous trees though in many towns and in the cities. The town I lived in, Bridgtown, Western Australia, was actually well known for the autumn colours.

I wouldn't say it's a good thing that we don't have native deciduous trees, because Fall colours are spectacular.
Fortunately there are many areas of Australia that can support the growth of deciduous trees. Canberra has many, as does parts of Victoria (the town of Bright especially) and as previously mentioned the New England region of NSW. There are also places in the Adelaide Hills, such as Stirling, which have some gorgeous Autumn scenes. I'm not sure about Tasmania, because I haven't been there, but I imagine it would have great Autumn colours, given its cool climate. I've seen a lot of Maple trees popping up where I live.
I think in a lot of ways that if "the big colourful thing" is what you like, autumn leaves are not the best that Australia has to offer. Wild flowers are a better option.
Wildflowers are one of the main tourist attractions in the state. Best seen from June-September, depending on the region.
