With windchill.....even somewhere like Canberra is cold in winter "with the wind chill".....
Even up here in Queensland we get temperatures well below freezing with the wind chill. A couple of years ago the university in Toowoomba recorded a wind chill adjusted temperature of -17.
My main complaint, with anything along those lines is "Australians this, Americans that". Both are large and diverse countries and too often there are generalisations that neglect that.
Weird exactly like my visit to Tassie a few years back. It was 29C the day I arrived at the airport, and I swear the next day it only reached 12C. When I went to Cradle Mountain it was snowing on the mountain, in summer. I was told it'd snowed THAT MORNING at the village, so I missed out. I was crushed lol.
This Aussie lives at 10,000ft in Colorado. We get temps of -35F with 50-80mph winds. This morning it was -23 C and 8" of snow. My diesel truck wouldn't start...
But the coldest I've ever been was growing up in QLD. No one ever heats their house in QLD, even though it gets pretty freaking cold in the winter. No matter the outside temps, my house in Colorado stays a steady 68-70f inside.

My house in Bridgetown, a fibro-shack with no insulation, used to get pretty cold in winter. First night I moved there it was -5C at night! Without heating, the temperature was probably 4-5C inside at coldest. One could see their breath indoors as early as 6pm. I had a bottle of olive oil that said 'may turn cloudy below 7C.' Well it wasn't just cloudy, it was a solid opaque block! First time scraping/hosing the ice off my car too.
I should mention it was something like -27 near Edmonton today with the wind chill....so, appreciate what ya got my Aussie friends lol

Pretty much. It was 32deg in Darwin yesterday, while 11 down south.
