You can argue that Australia is actually rather cooler than other places on its latitude.
The villages of our mountains like Thredbo and Charlotte Pass, which are no higher than 2,000m have surprisingly cold summers for their latitude (and altitude). Comparatively, Denver in the USA, lies on the same latitude AND altitude and yet they have rather hot summers.
Hobart's much further from the pole, and yet its summers are on par with London's (which is much closer to the poles). Okay, its winters aren't as cold as London's, but I still have a point.
Let's not forget Sydney and the east coast of Asia and America - They have far hotter summers. Despite the fact that we get extremes in the summer and they don't, they actually manage to see 30C+ weather almost everyday in the summer. Again, unlike our east coast, they have colder winters with snow.

It's not Australia which is cool for its latitude, London is warm for its latitude because of the Gulf Stream, and the east coast of the US gets weather straight of the Carribbean, warm and wet, alternating with arctic air off Canada. Denver is way inland, and thus more continental.
Well this weekend it hit 39c and 40C respectively a little outside Brisbane according to my modest weather station. The unheated pool was more like a hot tub, I didn't take the temp but I would bet well over 30C.
To me winter in many parts of the world is outside the human comfort zone, where in many parts of Australia its Summer. On the up side beer tastes a LOT better on a 40C day!
Reading the earlier posts, 12/13 degree tops in early summer (December) down south eastern Aussie? Don't think even London ever has got that cold in June - at least if it has, it would probably be the record daytime low!!

lol. It can get that cold but its not something that occurs that often. I do recall one day in January a few years ago, where the high was 11

Christmas 2006 in Melbourne, the maximum was 13.7°C. It hailed in my suburb and there was snow in the Dandenong Ranges and the Australian Alps. Firefighters battling bushfires a couple of days earlier in the Alps were having snowball fights, lol.
