Done some Geeky research and found that London has had such cold summer days. All in June, think the lowest in July was 16C, and the lowest in August was 17C, and not surprising that all these cold days were rainy days! So these are how many days since 1996 London has had temps at these temps, pretty much all in early June:
12C = 2 days
13C = 5 days
14C = 7 days
many of these days in June 2012 (One of the coldest and wettest summers on record for the UK), and although June 2002 only had 1 day below 15C - that month only had 1 day above 25C!

Anyways, I don't know how Melbourne, Hobart, or even Sydney compares?

Is air-conditioning a must for summer living in Australia?

It's convenient, especially in Queensland, It it a must? Well that is all a matter of opinion. Our neighbours across the road don't even own an electric fan, you certainly can live without it.

You could probably live without it in the Southern capitals if you are near the coast. (coastal Sydney is perfectly fine for example).
Even where I am, and about 25K's inland, it is a must unless you like sweating in summer.\
Lived 2 summers in the Northern Rivers (far north) of NSW without aircon, and it was close to unbearable - despite blinded locals saying it isn't that hot, and they didn't have it etc.
So anywhere north of here on the eastern seaboard, even near the coast, is a must too.
Brisbane and even Perth it is essential imo, having lived 2 summers in the latter, along with anywhere in Northern Australia.

No Fan!!! We have like a fan for every main room, and we live in just a mild country! You live in perfect, but hot, Queensland! Oh well, 'spose if your used to it, its not that bad - but what if you get a 40 degree heatwave? Or do you live in a part that hardly gets to 40?

It's a very large country, with climates from tropical through to cold temperate. Where the majority of the people live you're OK without A/C, if not exactly comfortable. Our bugs are restrained by screens (no no see'ums), which makes architectural solutions viable. But, even in the 80s most people had an airconditioned room, and it's more and more commn. And, of course, it's getting hotter, with hgher max temps and longer heat waves.

Well our neighbours are not really typical Aussies, Both are Vegetarians, have a garden full organic vegetables, a roof packed with solar panels, neither of them has a drivers licence etc etc. Basically they live in greeny heaven, they are nice neighbours though.

Our house in Brisbane fitted with 4 reverse cycle Air Conditioning units, as a rough guess I would say we use them for a total of about 7 weeks in a year, maybe 5 to cool us and 2 to keep us warm.

Haha, despite the solar panels, what silly people... Who am I to judge anyway? I've never met them!

Hah, my bros living out in Brisbane at the moment - talked to him lately and he said that it's been pretty hot out there... He said it's like 30 - 35, maybe the avocational day hitting 40, but with high humidity, typical Southeastern Queensland summer right? With loads of thunderstorms! Though yesterday (23rd Jan) was apparently not great at all - like, very wet and cool (23C - which is far to cold for Brisbo! - not that it's 6 degrees and raining over here atm, or anything )?!
But no, fans are used through much of the summer here, don't need aircons here though - we only get an av of 4 days at or above 30 a year

It has been really hot over the last week up till Thursday, certainly hotter than normal, the air conditioners have been getting a good work out that is for sure. However as you say yep 30-35 with an afternoon storm is typical SEQ weather for January, the coasts are usually a bit cooler, they get a better sea breeze than Brisbane City which is about 15 km from the coast.

It's better today, still about 30 degrees outside and bit cloudy, no need for the A/C however, opening the windows is sufficient
