I know you mention cities mostly, but if this really is to be your only visit to Australia, it would be a great shame to miss the Great Barrier Reef, one of the worlds natural wonders. Of course the list of things to do in such a large country are endless, and time is limited, but it really is amazing.

Just curious, the only way to really see the Great Barrier Reef is to be a diver, right?

No, surface snorkelling is the most common way of experiencing the reef. For those that don't want to get in the water there are glass bottom boats etc. of course if you are a qualified diver, then scuba diving is a great way to do it, but by no means necessary given the relatively shallow depth of the reef.

It's located in a lake at the end of a long jetty.

Here's a pic...
Oh my gosh! That's unbelievable! Thank you for posting that. That's exactly the kind of thing we'd love to do. Where is this place? How far from where we'll already be (Sydney, Melbourne, and New Zealand)?

Oh, I know! I was fully intending to go there. I just had no idea how remote and far from Sydney it is was. It's kind of like telling someone who was going to New York City that they just had to see San Francisco, too. Well, not quite, but you get my drift. I'm really disappointed, but I just don't see how we can manage -- financially at least -- to add that much more distance onto our itinerary.

I just thought of something that might help people here better know what suggestions to make regarding this trip. We just returned from an absolutely incredible 30-day road trip throughout Great Britain. When we think back to our favorite places, most of them were the smaller out-of-the-way towns. Several were resort towns, which I like if the touristy vibe is not overdone. Since we're from way, way inland, the coastal towns, fishing villages, etc. really appeal to me. It's odd, because I've always considered myself to be a real city person. I wouldn't want to live in a small town, but I do like to visit them.

2 hours flying time from Sydney and you are right amongst it. Less if you go to the southern end of the reef. It's an irrelevant time and cost difference compared to Brisbane or Adelaide which you were considering. That's why I suggested it. It's not at all analogous to NYC - SF. Even travelling across the entire continent from Syd to Perth is closer than that.
