Not sure if people on the forum would know both cities....but looking at the weather, it looks like Summers (January) in Auckland are around 20C/68F....

Sounds a bit like San Francisco during the summer. Just cold enough at times, that you want to have a sweater or jacket with you, when you go out, pretty much anytime of the day?

But never really all that cold either...no ice/snow or anything like that. Never really all that cold and never really all that warm either. If its anything like SF, people might go to the beach, but ocean temperatures would be cold, and the surfers would wear wet suits?

Would that be a fare description of Auckland weather?

My memory of SF water temperature, was that it was much colder than I was used to. I haven't used a wetsuit when surfing the upper North Island in summer, but would probably put on a spring suit if I was going to stay out all day.

Auckland is a moist climate compared to SF, which makes a big difference imo (feels warmer) I always carry something warm to wear, in case there's a sudden change -went golfing at the start of summer, with the temperature in the 20sC, halfway through the round,it had dropped to 7C, with hail and lightning and a windchill close to freezing. Auckland can get similar, but not as dramatic.

SF might be chilly, but plenty of warm climates nearby.

My impression from visiting both is that Auckland can get wilder weather and isn't as cool in summers as SF. And NZ can get remnants of tropical cyclones which doesn't happen in San Francisco.

Like this recent run of nasty Auckland weather in January:

Auckland is much cloudier than San Francisco, and has more than double its average rainfall annually.

Both have very mild climates so I guess for raw temperature it's a relatively fare comparison. I live in Auckland and can tell you the humidity is extremely high year round so it doesn't feel nearly as mild as the data may suggest. Its also far wetter and cloudier and as it isn't affected by the same cold water current and lots cloudier. Over all i'd say winter in both cities probably have some similarities, but Auckland is far wetter, far cloudier, more humid and noticeably warmer! If you check out Wellington New Zealand's climate I think the temps there are more similar.

Auckland is generally cloudier, warmer and wetter than SF. Also doesn't get half the fog that SF does.

Definitely not! Auckland is much warmer than SF.
SF is prone to a lot of cold windy days - more like Wellington.
Also the western side (beaches) of SF has a lot of fog - Auckland doesn't get that much - and the water (Bakers Beach anyone? ) is freezing.
Very compatible with Wellington, not Auckland.

Quite. Both are usually windy cities and cold.

One thing I hated about SF was the sudden arrival of the cold wind after midday - 2pm, I recall rushing into four different stores in a week buying either an jumper or jacket - didn't need to do that in Auckland.

Don't get me wrong, SF is a lovely city but it would be a much better place without the wind!

The heading is wrong, it should say SF vs Wellington and if it came down to a choice between these two - I would pick SF because at least some warm to hot days are guaranteed annually (exceeding 30C+) unlike Wellington where a single 25C day is major headlines

SF is much sunnier and drier than either Auckland or Wellington. The "winds" I have experienced there are absolutely piffling compared to any number of NZ locations - and certainly those include Auckland and Christchurch.

Auckland's annoying southwesterlies are seriously underrated by many.

San Francisco is nothing like a match for any NZ location. Nowhere in NZ has a season that is anywhere close to rainless.

I think lots of people from outside the region are surprised by NZ's weather. Because it's part of the South Pacific and because it's made up of islands, they expect it to be more vacation-like all the time, closer to either Hawaii or Australia, and the dampness and cold can come as a shock.
