Easter Island is an unusual example, the landscape was decimated, strangely a remote place I'd love to visit. (flights are from Tahiti).
Other islands are very fertile with very reliable rainfall etc.
As they are still poor it may take some time to grow to any big populations, as economies move more towards tourism and business, and away from fishing and agriculture.
Singapore is a prime example of how an island can transform itself.

Singapore is a pretty special case. I don't expect to see a lot of Singapore type places in the pacific Islands.
