Probably no place is safe but, according to this, Hamilton may be less prone than other areas. I just ran across this other day because I was wondering the same thing. But maybe someone who actually knows Hamilton can chime in:
The further north you go, generally the less earthquakes. There's never any earthquakes here in auckland and if there is there usually too small too feel

I've lived in Hamilton most of my life and we don't get earthquakes anywhere near as bad as further south but occasionally we will get small ones (usually due to larger ones in the southern part of the North Island). Like someone else said, pretty much the further north you go the smaller and less frequent they become. Because of this Whangarei would be the safest city for earthquakes... although I couldn't say the same about tsunamis

Both of those lie on an active volcano zone, so you have that to worry about too, also the central north island gets quite a few quakes... especially lately. If you moved there now you could probably expect to feel several in a year.
The southern part of Alpine Fault are more prone to earthquakes it further extends along the Hope Fault into Marlborough. The area of Auckland and Dunedin are the lowest risk prone areas.
