White children were certainly taken and placed with "white" families. If only white children were placed with white families, then it would have been "us and them" thinking. Did any of these families have some degree of Aboriginal heritage? Its quite possible.
You need to remember who, on balance, were the disadvantaged and who were the well to do with both the resources and desire to be foster parents in that era.
The point missed here is that mixed races children were under serious threat from the very tribes that gave them up.
Another point missed is that the ''Stolen Generation '' was originally about the children sent to Australia by the British Authorities during WW2 and then somehow switched over to the Aboriginal children in Australia.
I say Aboriginal because the definition of 'Indigenous" means anyone born of that country.and I , aand my parents all were certainly born and lived in Australia
Actually I am happy like many other Australians that same sex marriage is not legalised yet and would not like to see same sex marriage legalised. So far the Australian government has not legalised it, due to the ruling governments not granting it, and if the no case wins then perhaps this will continue. It still can be possible that same sex marriage will not be legalised and nothing is impossible.
Anyway according to polls there has been a reduction on support for same sex marriage in Australia. Note I am quoting from a rather left wing site too: Same-sex marriage support drops: poll | SBS News
I am a Christian and I have my Christian convictions to see that marriage is only for a man and a woman, however I personally know people that are not even religious that will vote no or stated they don't want to see same sex marriage legalised here.
That's a pity because conferring such rights does not impact you or your non religious friends. In reality, the arguments against SSM really boil down to religious objections. Such objections, though they may be your firm convictions, should not prevent others from getting rights. We are talking about so few people who will even do it. It really is a non issue.
I support SSM, but then again, I will freely admit to being in one. I am therefore biased. However, after 20 years of being with the one person, I wonder if it was too much to have asked of my country to protect our rights? In the case of similarly situated people in Oz, the answer is also no, it's not too much to ask.
Question ...how many of you married 'straight' folks had to ask the permission of the general public through the means of a national survey before you could go ahead and get married? Anyone? SO, why the heck should we be asking the nameless, faceless public - who play no part in the lives of the ones for whom they are asked to make such a decision - if it's okay with them as to whether or not two gay folks can marry? WHY??

Spot on. Like I said earlier, this is one debate where I feel the No campaign has no legitimacy whatsoever.

You DO realize, do you not, 99, that same-sex relationships in Australia will not suddenly disappear with a "no" vote? The thing that you appear to despise because of the influence on you of some ancient holy book will not rid Australia of homosexuality OR of long-term gay relationships. So, what will a "no" vote actually accomplish for you personally? The 'evil' that you imply will still remain.

I didn't read the link; however, why would there be a reduction in support for gay marriage ...on account of those stupid, over-the-top and TOTALLY irrelevant "Vote No!" ads on TV? Are Australians REALLY that stupid that they would be taken in by that crud? But then, Australians voted against a Republic in 1999 (chose to remain under the scepter of the British Queen!) and also (gasp) voted in Tony Abbot as Prime Minister of Australia several years ago ...so I guess anything is possible.

I continue to ask the same question ...why should two adults who wish to marry EVEN THINK to consult you for approval, 99?? Are YOU married? If so, did you have to go through some national survey to grant you permission to marry someone of your choice? The Bible says NOTHING about either homosexuality or gay marriage. And, even if it did, the lives of actual PEOPLE and the decisions that THEY might make trump anything that a book might state. When it comes to a topic such as this, the use of an alleged 'holy book' to guide one's decision-making is totally irrelevant.
Let me suggest a scenario, 99. Two gay people who love one another approach Jesus to ask His advice re their wanting to spend their lives together in matrimony. You, 99, seem to think that you have the answers on this topic since you use the Bible to allegedly support your "no" vote. How would Jesus handle this scenario, do you think?

Nice try. I have yet to meet a “Christian” who was able to specify how a marriage of a SS Couple that they probably don’t know will have a direct influence on their relationship.
I'm an Aussie living in Florida. Got my postal notification about the vote. Voted Yes online. Get on with it. Move on, move forward. Let love rule FFS.

The 1999 Republic Referendum was doomed to failure, Johnny Howard right from the word go made it complicated and unlikely to pass.
Plus, that was a long time ago now, and a lot of the conservative attitude of that time may have changed.
Referendums historically are hard to pass.
The Same Sex Marriage Referendum will probably only get a small majority now by the looks of it.
