The question posed should be perhaps not why Australia is so developed but can it remain so?

Well I've heard that Baseball is quite big in Australia, there's nothing wrong with that.

Basketball is pretty popular as a school sport and as a professional league; baseball not so much.

Well innocent enough I guess. Thing being it isn't that popular. Not a game I hear discussed, know anyone that plays and for the most part only an additional school sport 'optional' offered in some schools.

Not really from what I can tell. Cricket is big though.

Yep, a lot of Australian basketball players head across to play in the NBA and WNBA, but I can't recall any Aussies ever playing major league baseball.

There have been about 30 to make it to the big league, heaps going around in the minors. Only one currently in the majors, Liam Hendriks who plays for the A's. He's a relief pitcher on the very modest salary (by MLB standards) of $2.15mil.

Dave Nilsson, Grant Balfour and Graeme Lloyd have probably been the most successful, but not many sports fans in Australia would know their names.

And basketball is also very big in the USA, so basketball is something else that Australia has that makes it more like the USA, nothing wrong with that.

Basketball is huge in Australia. Probably only second to baseball. I've always said that's what makes the two countries so similar.

And although Cricket is not all that big in the USA, there are people who play it. Nothing wrong with that.
