Are the beaches all topless in Australia and NZ? Americans know about keeping the kids away from some of the European beaches, but I'm not sure what the culture is like down under.
No not really. It doesn't seem as common as in Europe, but it does exist. Places like Surfers Paradise/Gold Coast where Japanese tourists are running around snapping photos and videoing everything, I've never seen it much. However north of Brisbane on the Sunshine coast on certain beaches it is much more common.
Really it depends on the beach. The places where families are about, videographers, leering pervert types you wont see it much, but quieter beaches it is more common. In any case, aussie chicks that do sunbathe topless often put their top back on before walking around, unlike Spain, France, etc. where once the top is off it stays off.
Yes, We have topless beaches and even nude beaches. But as UV (UltraViolet) radiation levels, Get very high during an Australian summer. Most people have become aware, Thats it's not a good idea to expose yourself for too long, Or you risk getting a melanoma cancer?
Skin cancer is a major health issue Down Under!

Our beaches are predominantly beaches for people wearing bathers, with a few specific, separate beaches for clothing-optional.
In Perth you don't have to worry about trying to keep your kids away from nudist beaches. We have so much beach, most of it for people wearing bathers. Only nudist beach I know of in the northern part of Perth is North Swanbourne Beach. I believe in the south, there's a couple, one in Rockingham, but things may have changed.
Like KangarooFarmer says, with our sun here, the last thing I'd want to do is sizzle my tender bits
As a kid, before the whole skin-cancer awareness thing, we used to burn and peel, burn and peel. In retrospect, it was crazy but that's just the way it was. There weren't things like sunscreens and SPF, etc. I'm not as fair as most Aussies but I still often burned, especially my shoulders, and since we often spent most of the day at the beach.
Nowadays, it's so much more pleasant to enjoy the beach, protected by SPF30+, rashie vests and pop-up shade tents. Of course, there are some who lay out there, roasting away in teeny bikinis, especially teenagers, and British tourists. I always find myself wincing at the sight of them, knowing what awaits them later in the day. And the sleepless nights because it hurts to lay on scorched skin.
