It's probably related to the phrase "New Zealand ends at the Bombay hills". Having lived in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, I've seen it from both sides. Auckland has about 1/3 of NZ's population, imagine Los Angeles having a population of 100 million or even Sydney having 6 million. Many people I met in Auckland haven't been to the South Island, that sort of thing.

Then please, exit with your ignorance, by all means. Go back to your properly groomed, properly dressed, grand old US of A. Postings such as that are the epitome of all things loathed by "simple" New Zealanders. Yes, it is wonderful to believe you have a nation of perfect teeth in your big mouths, to live in big, beautiful heavily mortgaged houses with a gas-guzzling behemouth motor or two in the picket-fenced yard, to savour the processed goodness that once was food but now McDonald's, to worship the Vegas tables on tuesday, because God gets Sunday. Good-on-you for voting in a black president (100+yrs after abolition) Wake up. Your society is a carefully contructed veil of excess draped over the decaying, seething mess beneath.

You go, girl! (Probably a US orginated phrase).

I is quite costly to move to another country, so it is not the poor who are leaving. And large amounts of money are leaving with them.
Well, they're leaving for a lower quality of life then....

The fact is those that leave are leaving temporarily due to their jobs perhaps.

Sounds like many who leave don't come back. This is just one of many articles on the subject.

no, you've got it all wrong, we don't actually park in the yard on the grass (gads!), we typically park in attached garages. And picket fences are, shall I say it, so ... passe.

I have to agree with you, a lot of them would be better off staying put and making the most of what they've got, even if it means a move within the country. There isn't much, if anything, worth moving to NZ for.

Guess you could say the scenery is great but so is the USA's. There's nothing in NZ that can't be got elsewhere in the world
