Is that right there the essence of "...She'll be right..."?
It would be nice to be rich,
but ever since I was a kid looking at people with big homes and flashy cars,
I imagined to myself if they're trying to look like they're "All That" with their millions of dollars of luxury toys,
then the jokes on them because even with all that money, THEY'RE STILL HERE!!!
(and still cold, just like everyone else )

Guess...
I've never identified with the Australian mentality generally speaking. Both my parents were the same, but one of them was Polish. Ever since I was little, the U.S. has fascinated me. I went to Europe and the U.K a couple times..Italy certainly resonated with me, but I couldn't imagine living there.
It used to be that I felt I didn't 'fit in' here in Aust, but I'm a bit too old to worry about that now. It's more like it isn't a good fit these days, I'm done with trying to fit in, and not afraid to show my discontent. Yes, I am a curmudgeon! I also have never liked the strong accent here, and was very carefully coached when I was a kid, so it wouldnt develop. Mind you, Adelaide doesn't have that strong accent anyhoo.
I wanted to post a coupla Youtube vids up, especially of "America" from West Side Story but I can't connect to Youtube. Just imagine I'm dancing around singing "I like to be in America...." Or not.

Interesting that you're so fascinated with New Orleans then, as they have probably one of the mildest Southern accents around (resembling New Yorkers? ) Then outside the city there are some crazy Cajun accents, like this:
but just a short drive out of New Orleans and you'll probably be surrounded by accents "...thicker than MO-lasses.." Have you ever heard of "Soulja Boy"? He's next door, from Mississippi. Though his rapping style is a little slurred, it's actually believable for someone from the Deep South; easily 5+% of the residents are that relaxed with their speech, male and female alike.
English with English sub-titles anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpocr...rom=PL&index=8
All residents from "North Louisiana" (where ever that starts, could be north of Lake Ponchartrain...) are known to have a very typically "Southern" accent. Tim McGraw I hear is a Louisiana native.

Thanks Moon and CC! Moon: what do we care how 'dorky' it is, if it's how we feel??
CC: Sorry, I'm not expressing myself to well. I don't mind thick accents, just not...Australian ones. The NOLA one is pretty distinctive, and not anywhere like your "Why howdy ma'm, whyn't y'all jiss think about all that tomorra?" drawl. (That was a highly obtuse Gone With the Wind reference). It's sorta like Brooklyn mixed with maybe a touch of ....Texas? Not that twangy though. In reference to the OP, that's another reason I prolly shouldn't have been born in Aust..hate the accent!

Love that KIA ad! Thanks for that.
We don't get too many good, creative ads here.
De accent of dat guy in de Kia, eh, sound much like da Quebecois! Same for the music - French-Canadian folk music, to me, has a lot of similarity to Zydeco and Cajun music. Lots of fiddle playing and accordians.

The dream of America is a good one; it's just not "practical" in my case.
Believe me, there are thicker native Louisiana accents;
probably at least 90% of Louisiana are regions with much thicker accents.
This lady has all sorts of articles, jokes, recipes, stories about life in the South, predominantly in northeast Louisiana.
She even has her shows on video that you can watch if your computer is set up right.
If you're having trouble hearing the lady on All Things Southern,
she sounds similar to Reba McEntire, (the red head ) like in this link, only with a more-relaxed, colloquial manner of speech.
I have an english mother, and did move to england for a few years for what i considered a bit of a home comming, i always had a facination with the place for most of the reasons other people have outlined, beautiful green fields, history and thoes beautiful little towns.
I had everything a young person living in london could dream of really, great job, friends and enough free time to get over to the european mainland every couple of weeks.
After a while however i started to realise i could not associate with the culture very much at all, in the end england is just a cold wet crowded place with much worse unemployment and crime problems than we have in oz, not somewhere where i would want to raise a family.
I have to admit I have never had any desire what so ever to move to the USA. I do regret no doing a WHV in Canada when the opportunity presented itself however.
