Probably the most retarded idea I've ever seen is that single-carriageway "reversable expressway" that changes direction depending on the time of day. Honestly, what the hell???? Even Canberra and Hobart have proper freeways.

Yes, well in my case, I regarded it as a community service. And from some of the luffly Adelaideans frequenting Maslin Beach, I'd say they were doing the same thing!

It seems to me, most urban Australians don't really even think of Adelaide much at all, and when they do they think about the allegations of a high crime rate (which I don't believe to be true). I also get the impression that youth turn to alcohol or drugs out of boredom, but this applies to all of regional Australia too.

Don't get me wrong, I'd live in Adelaide before Sydney hands down. There's just a psychological feeling of emptiness and remoteness to the place, especially for someone from a large city.
I lived in adelaide for 6 years and now live back in melbourne. there are definite differences in australians from different states, which makes it more interesting. Im an Australian myself and have lived in every australian state . Victorians who are over third generation australian do seem more civilized and nicer people than adelaide people who are alot rougher and colder perth people are as well . Victorians are very civilized you will find quite alot of decent people in Victoria and some very highly educated academics come from Victoria as well and are often also found working in adelaide and perth universities and businesses.

The social complex of australians is now quite sophisticated and complex due to the many layers of immigrants from all european countries, east asia and the americas over the last 130 years and newer and recent migrants from different asian and middle eastern countries and combine this with the vast areas of employment in Australia and also the distinct class system in australia who also hold different views from each other, then there is the sport influence which australians love . Sothere is no simple answer but each individual rather adds his own contribution to a growing plethora of australianisms.

And definitely way more than small towns in W.A., which seem extremely quiet and almost lifeless, comparitively. Not meaning to disparage, or criticise, it's just different that's all, and small town Aussies like it that way. Small town USA is a different species to small town Oz.

Plus, you're not that far away from the big city, or bigger towns, in the US. Many small towns in W.A., or in other states are so far from other places. You have to like small town life as well as the isolation. I could take the former, not the latter.

btw: Colorado is amazing. I could live here.
Just got back from a short trip down south, stayed out three nights. I hadn't been down south since 2006 and yes, I find that to be the case in most small towns here. The Wheatbelt is especially depressing, but even in the touristey Southwest alot of towns were dead quiet. Peak hour on the main street is more than three people .

Though an exception seemed to have been Bunbury, funnily enough. As I drove through the streets of Bunbury at about 9pm at night I was surprised at how many cars were about. Walking down the main street was actually as crowded feeling as Perth at the same time of day.

I don't think it's 'boring' any more than any other Aus city (except for Melbourne). But you try making a living there without being in some kind of clique. It's waaaay too small and has the small town mentality of gossip and suspicion of new things. I mean, New Orleans has a much smaller population and a similar inward looking parochial feel to it, but is accepting of outsiders. Adelaide prides itself on a few festivals, but that is the ONLY time people ever become even slightly adventurous. I know this b/c we ran a cabaret venue for three long, hard, depressing years. We tried everything, but unless there is actually a festival happening, forget it. People are sooo strange there, it felt to us as if there was a lower level of intelligence generally. We continually had to repeat things...sloooooowly. Oh, and second guessing everything you say, here's one shining example:

We held a gay and lesbian fundraiser, the GLBT community is usually a bit more willing to have a bit of fun...so we thought. I mean, I worked within the community, so it seemed like the chance for a good night for once. My partner was working the bar, and said jovially to a customer "so, what would the most handsome guy here like to drink?" Now I said jovial, as in...happy..not as in "Im making fun of you".
The guy glared at him and said "Are you saying I'm ugly?".

Okaaaay. But that example is fairly typical of the majority of Adelaidians thinking, that you cant actually mean what you say, you MUST mean something else.

But boring? Nah.

Edit: I actually really like the Sth Aust countryside, and Pt Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills yadda yadda..its just Deadalaide itself that gives me a rash.
I don't like to say negative things about places I haven't actually lived in but I have to say South Oz was the second least friendly feeling place apart from the Sydney area. I was expecting more small town hospitality from a smaller city, but found it strangely lacking. It does have a kinda backwards feeling - even more so than Perth, like it's stuck in the 1980s or something. I did meet some friendly folk though, but SA did give me a weird vibe.

Its the southern expressway going from the city to Noarlunga and points south. During the morning its open northbound for the commute into the city and at end of day southbound. On weekends it works in the opposite direction. I'd take it on weekends to go to McClaren Vale and it was southbound in the morning and northbound in the afternoon after a day of wine tasting and eating.

I love South Aussies.. the nicest folks I've met in Oz. My last trip in Adelaide I chatted up a bus driver and a week later I saw him again and he had made a CD for me of the music he was playing when we first met. When I stop in at the chemist they tell me to stop rushing like a yank and sit down relax and chat with them for a while (or stop by at closing and join them at the pub). I walked into a new chemist my last trip out and I went across the street for tea and he walked in and joined me, along with the owner of the cafe. I've walked into a resto and was brought a jumper that I left the week prior (it was only my second time there). I never got a weird vibe from people in Adelaide. Not at all. Now from Jacqs.. I do. LOL.. kidding.

Incredibly retarded thing. Why couldn't they just build a real freeway? It would've saved them time, cost, and logistics in the long run, but I guess this is what happens when you have retard mongoloid labor idiots running the state and country.

Reminds me of the Douglas Arterial "motorway" (actually 2 lane road) in Queensland, which they want to duplicate only months after completing.

GOD I HATE OUR DUMBASS RETARD GOVERNMENTS

Canberra is a very classy town with some magnificent and imposing structures and is a place for the bureaucrats and diplomats, politicians, would be leaders, lobbyists, tourists and government workers. its not as exciting as other Australian ciities.
Canberra actually has 2 governments the federal and the local government which is quite progressive, some would say the most progressive of Australias government systems. Canberra always gets tourists from all over Australia and around the world.

I think I've heard rumours that in Canberra there's a significant problem with drugs, porn
and that their attempt at numerous city parks flopped.
They made large grassy areas with benches for outdoor recreation,
but most of the year the grass burns to a crisp and the benches often have little to no shade around them
(intermittent tree plantings around the perimeter)
and found that almost no-one wants to "sit in the hot sun" in a dry field,
so the parks are usually empty.

*This is just what I read from some internet sites.
