It depends which part of the U.S you're talking about. It's such a diverse country. If you said "is the food better?", for example, I'd say that nothing, I mean nothing anywhere compares to food in the deep south, especially New Orleans. I had home-made ranch for the first time there, and I don't blame anyone for complaining if they can't find it. Nothing compares. We tried southern food in SF one time; nope, no good. And forget about trying to find it down under.
However, a woman at work complained that all her friends in Houston ever ate were burgers, and she of course assumed that was what Americans ate all the time. I think a lot of ppl down 'ere think of "American food" as nothing more than fast, fried and fattening. But fast food is global, and pretty generic.

If you can find the 'specialties' of regional USA, I think Aust just doesn't compare foodwise. As to friendlieness, it depends again where you are. I find Melbourne to be less uptight than Syd or Adelaide, and the country people anywhere are most helpful of all. But I thought people in the U.S were amazing everywhere..that may just have been their reaction to our accents however. (I still don't get why you guys go apeshot over the Aust accent..I hate it!)

I just think the U.S is waaaay too diverse to be able to pin down specifics, but what mini said about prices is so true, and that'd no doubt be a deciding factor for anyone crazy enough to wanna move here from the U.S

I agree Australia doesn't compare foodwise. I never find the quality and the prices to be as good as the US. However the US does have 305 million people and Australia 21 million so it's to be more expected. I also haven't found much in the way of regional specialties like in the USA. In Texas for instance you might have mesquite smoked BBQ or tex-mex cooking, Pennsylvania a philly cheesesteak or soft pretzel, Maine you might have lobster, Massachusetts you might have clam chowder, Illinois you might have Chicago deep dish pizza, Georgia peach pie and fried chicken and so on. There are a lot of regional differences in American cooking and I haven't seen that in Australia.

However on my next trip I am going to make a good effort to find some good places to eat in Australia rather than taking a random approach to it. Here in the USA I travel for work so I always research online before I go anywhere to find the local regional favorite restaurants.

Yeah, there's lots of little differences to get used to although there's Best Foods and Hellman's mayo in most grocery stores. They're expensive but the other stuff just isn't the same, too vinegary and weird.

There's Paul Newman's Ranch as well as several other of his dressings. There's El Paso Taco Seasoning Mix. Just not the variety as you see in the average American grocery store, as expected.

Tell your friend to google USAFoods - a store in Melbourne that carries a lot of food items from "back home" - they ship all over Australia and are real reliable and good. We order from them a couple times a year, for those necessities we can't live without (Crisco, Bull's Eye, canned tomatillos, good hot sauce, Farina, etc.).

They don't make porn in Australia.

I guess that makes them different.

My friends watch a lot and say they've seen all kinds except Australian. Apparently, there's some kind of law out there against making it? Ionno.

Uh huh.. my "friends" watch a lot... Kidding.. I've seen Aussie made porn. Australia isn't living in the dark Victorian ages. Do a google for australian porn and prepared to be shocked (or otherwise).
