How about spreads, like butter, mayo, vegemite etc. to accompany the "salad?"
Are "salad sandwiches" sold in restaurants?
I've seen somewhat similar sangers made here, like lettuce, real cheddar slices and tomato with mayo; usually homemade.
Butter and mayo, yes, definately. Vegemite however, dosen't really go with salad (or anything else! ) and is usually eaten on it's own, as a vegemite sandwich.
Yeah, You can buy Salad Sandwiches/Salad rolls (Salad in a hamburger bun), in many deli's and lunch bars.
This continues to be a very entertaining and educational thread.
Actually, in New Jersey, I've been eating salad sandwiches since a kid ... only I like my bread toasted! Mostly served to us in the summer as my father kept a vegetable garden and our tomatos were yummmmm! Sometimes it would show up on the table as a BLT! Even yummmmmier!
I'm fairly open minded but some of the combinations here make me a bit queasy ... but then if I haven't tried it I shouldn't knock it! Okay, I tried vegemite ...

I think in most cases, you have to have grown up with it. I don't know too many non-Aussie converts to Vegemite. A few, but most hate it, or at best, just don't get why you'd want to eat it in the first place. My husband's in the former group - he loathes it. Calls it axle grease or pureed flies. But he doesn't manage to gross me out enough to not eat it. I grew up with it.
Although, when it comes to sandwiches, for me, nothing beats a good Montreal Smoked Meat (or in NYC a Pastrami on Rye). Next best for me is a Club Sandwich. Neither of which I've seen here. Different world, different cuisine.
I don't mind salad sandwiches here, but I always ask for no carrot. Last time I ordered one with carrot, it made the top half of the bun soggy, as grated carrot is actually quite moist. Gross
We do that too. The real common one is didjeet? Translation= Did you eat?
I just realized something;
I almost-never notice times when words are run together, to the point it sounds like a "compound word."
This is including when I'm down South around people with THICK drawls.
It's nearly always easy for me to detect separate words.
(unless the topic is a very unusal one)
Perhaps I subconsciously find it odd when in some informal situations
to carefully articulate a pause between each and every word.

Vegemite doesn't go with anything?
If that's what most Aussies believe, then I'm more surprised and confused about its popularity.
Mustard and horseradish are kind of unusual flavours, yet they go with some foods.
So what, do some people eat vegemite straight; right out of the jar?
If anything, I would have assumed it might be good on something plain, like eggs or in mashed potatos.
I'd like to try Vegemite, but I don't think they sell it around here...
I do know that specialty stores sell "Marmite."
How does the taste of marmite compare with vegemite?
