Yeah go to certain areas and it's quite depressing how many obese people there are. I was talking to some tourists and they were saying 'where are all the fat people, I mostly see skinny people!' They generally stick to the 'glamorous' spots like Sydney or the Gold Coast full of fit young things and gym junkies. The 'burbs are a world away.

Yes, you're right Trimac. I got my opinion updated after one of my infrequent forays to one of the shopping centres in the 'burbs this morning. Such a shame to see young people, especially, well down the road of long-term health problems. Add excessive alcohol consumption to it, and our health system will well and truly collapse.

I saw some new figures recently that showed Australians have now surpassed America in terms of the percentage of the population that is now obese.
It is sad to see as often in the grocery store I always see young women that are absolutely enormous and are only in their 20's. However their appearance is of a much older age.

I'm wondering if it's the high alcohol consumption that's pushed us over the edge, as alcohol has a lot of calories.
There was a recent report of a large proportion of young women here in Perth easily spending $50 or more on an evening out, on alcohol alone. I know drinks are expensive here but that's at least 4 of the pricier drinks, 5 or 6 of the cheaper ones (no tipping here), and that would give you almost half your daily calories. Those pre-mixed drinks are popular with girls and they have at last 200 calories in them. That's assuming they've not downed a few before going out (to save money).

I'm sure the alcohol is a big part of it. A number of aussie girls I knew that put on a lot of weight drunk tons of alcohol.

I think it's a combination of booze, bad food and inactivity. Often if you're active, you can get away with the other 2..for a while. But it all catches up with you one day. Seeing such young people already clinically obese is alarming. I dunno, re-introduce conscription? Work farms?? Teach things like growing food without using a mouse and pc? Hm..
