Compare/Contrast Australia's 6 Territories-What Are They Like? How Are They Different?
I have always been interested in Australia. Could you please tell me what each of the 6 areas(you call them territories or states?) are like? What is the geography like in each one? What are the people like? Thank you for your time.

A good place to start is Wiki to get a basic understanding of the "territories"
Afterwards, go have a look at the many threads discussing various places to live in Oz and discussions on people in Oz..
then ask away once you have questions to fill in the blanks..

Western Australia has flys. Not so much Perth but you have to accept that you will always be waving away flys once you begin to explore the inland of the state.
South Australia has Coober Pedy. People live underground there because of the heat. Mining opals is the go there. Then there is Gawler where the Murray River meets the ocean. And the Adelaide Hills. South Australia has gained a reputation for serial killers although it is really pretty safe. They put the bodies in barrels in an old bank vault amongst other things.
Victoria is known as the sporting capital of Australia. A game known as Australian rules football gets everybody into a fever. There is also a horse race known as the Melbourne cup which attracts national and international attention.
New South Wales is Australia. To a point. By and large any geographic condition the other states have can be found in NSW and then it has the harbour to boot.
Australian Capital Territory is the home of the national parliament. It's o'k but....they make all these laws.
Queensland. Talking tropics. Go fo it.
Northern Territory has Uluru and dispalays of the indigenous culture. The pride of the indigenous needs lifting as you will see if you visit. I would like to rename the whole nation Uluru to see if it helps re-establish their pride in the land.
And then Tasmania. Reminds people a little of England when they go there. Quaint.
There a few other territories off shore.

South Australia - Probably the most conservative state. very very very very very easy paced lifestyle. The old fogy state. Known as the murder state. really trully... just look at its car number plates.
Western Australia - Largest state by land area. These guys are great at digging things up out of the ground and putting them on ships to other countries. Often called gods waiting room. often fights with South Australia for the title of "nobody gives stuff about us" state.
Queensland - Redneck/Ute capital of Australia. A place where beetroot is put on everything. And i mean everything. Also the home of Brisbane, where people only go to visit as it's close to the Gold Coast. Also the home state of Pauline Hanson. Queensland's resident bigot. nuff said.
Victoria - Smallest mainland state by land area. Most densely populated. Most liberal state. The only state to pass referendum for Australia to become a republic. Home of trams, and just about every major event you think of. too bad the weather can often suck.
New South Wales - Most populous state. Home of super conservative former Prime Minster John Howard. That's really plenty enough to hate the place just for that. for many of its residents the best thing to come out of it is the Hume Hwy which of course is the yellow brick road that leads to Victoria.
Australia Capital Territory - Snoooozefest - full of politicians and the off spring of the Melbourne Versus Sydney rivalry.
Northern Territory - It has that big red rock thingy and Kakadu NP and pretty much nothing in between.
Tasmania - Home of the inbred smile. Once described by the great Don Bradman as the place you have to travel overseas to get to. Also the home of our greatest psychopathic killer, Martin Bryant.

^ ^ Thank you very much for your informative post. I apologize for calling your States territories. I'm one of the few Americans who can name the six states and all the Canadian provinces and territories. One huge flaw in the American educational system is the lack of teaching about other countries, their culture, and languages. We Americans truly miss out. For instance, I live by a Polish guy who speaks 4 languages including English and Russian. Another friend from Denmark speaks almost flawless English. Back to the topic, Australia has always reminded me of the U.S. with its English origin, vast landscape, and indigenous ppl. Regarding Martin Bryant, was he the "Backpack Killer"? Who was the guy that shot up the lunch cafe'/restaurant? Ya'll got a long way to go before ya rack-up as many serial killers as we've had in the U.S.

I don't think that the number of serial killers, is something that Americans should be boasting about?
The Backpacker Murders were done by Ivan Milat, who killed several people in New South Wales and dumped them in a state forest.
Martin Bryant shot 35 people in a cafe, at the Historic Port Arthur Prison in Tasmania.

She seems like a pretty crazy brood from what I read on wikipedia and saw on youtube. Not to hijack the thread, but I'd be interested in hearing what Aussies generally think of her.

She was jailed for a while for electoral fraud. But it was a miscarriage of justice and she was released on appeal I think it was.
Think of her. Pretty harmless but is a xenophobe and managed to connect with other xens for a while. Has this voice where you always think she is on the verge of tears when you hear her speak.
Best described as having a chip on her shoulder about something and managing to become a public figure representing others with chips on their shoulder. She's o'k and is probably now relaxing.
