I've never actually lived in a Coober Pedy dugout! Though I believe that some of the homes can be really elaborate? With almost every mod-con imaginable, from en-suite bathrooms to home cinema rooms...and even swimming pools - Plus they're just a great way of beating the 40+ degree celcius desert heat and are more energy efficient than an above ground house, as they stay at the same temperature all year round.

Almost everyone in the South Australian town lives underground during the heat of the day and during the cool evenings, they surface to socialise or to resume mining their plot for Opals.

There's also underground Churches, Shops, a Cafe and a Hotel, that have been dug into the sandstone hillsides.

I spent a few nights in an undergrdound hotel in Coober Pedy, had every thing you would expect in a three star hotel. (I think their are 5 star ones).
It was the middle of winter, so the temperature was really quite cool outside. The good thing about living in the rocks is that the temperature remains quite constant year round.

I'm glad you mentioned Mad Max! I went to a Mad Max website and downloaded their kml file of their first movie locations on Google Earth. Also on that sight I found this very recent news, Mad Max 4 Fury Road - Current Status

Looks like 2 1/2 more years of waiting.

I think underground homes are a really good idea, saves on the heating and cooling bills and helps the environment.
